I'll preface this by saying that, obviously, what is and isn't OK for this forum is completely down to the Administration / Mod team and I'm not in any way disputing that, nor am I going to bleat on about free speech because this is obviously a privately owned website.
What I am looking for, basically, is a straight and to-the-point answer on whether or not every thread as described in the title is going to be cropped down to a few pages, or deleted completely, as soon as it gets a little heated? I appreciate that the number of post reports etc. Must get irritating but... To be blunt... I doubt it's as irritating as spending time writing several long responses in a thread only for them to vaporise.
I'm genuinely only asking so that I know for certain that the best course of action is probably to avoid writing in such threads at all or at least keep responses down to a sentence or two.
To add my tuppence worth, I think it would actually be a great shame for it to go that way, because this is the first forum I've been on in a LONG time on which people can get very heated, even personal, in one thread and g yet remain lighthearted and friendly in other threads on the same day (or even at the same time!) and it's really very refreshing.

Great question, looking forward to the response :)
What you don't 'appear' to realise is that there has been a sharp sharp increase of immigration threads to serious debates in the past few weeks. Far far more than this forum can sustain and that's a FACT.
Now I'm not saying we should just get rid of all the immigration threads, that would be absurd but the FACT is and that's a FACT by the way is that this sub forum is absolutely full to the brim with good honest threads that really don't want to be caught up in all the savagery of immigration threads and posts.
I'm saying we should ideally be putting a stop to it as much as possible and if that makes me a 'censoring right winger' then so be it I will gladly wear it with pride and that's a FACT.

Are you aware of the number of innocent people who are receiving warnings and bans thanks to the evils of increased immigration posts?
The FACT is its chaos out there, this forum is not a big forum like momsnet or stampcollection.org they can take all these 'threads' we can't.
I've been saying this for weeks now, when we are looking at some time in the future like May 2015 this forum will be absolutely choc full of immigration posts and immigration threads that absolutely do not want to be a part of a peaceful civilised 'debate' like the rest of us. I'm sick of all this liberal do gooder oh let's leave all the threads alone they will make good honest poster likes me want to move to chat and games and I don't want that.
There needs to be a 'controlled' and regulated 'format' where undesirable immigration posts can be turned away. I'm sorry if that sounds callous but it's the way it is.

...sorry if this post is rushed TS..(as I should be at work right now...)...but I just wanted to say from a personal viewpoint of what you've said....
..I can completely understand when posts are removed or a thread is closed and you've taken such time to write long posts/become involved, how annoying that is...but I'm finding it also annoying if I do have an interest in a thread..?...to have to scroll back through several pages to kind of find the thread of the thread so to speak because so many threads are often taken completely off course and so derailed that they're just so hard to follow/and almost nothing to do with the original topic in some cases....and it isn't that I'm not interested in what people have to say and their thoughts on these topics but it's often the same thoughts just repeated..?...posts that don't really say much different from the previous one and the one before and the thread before etc....I think maybe when Mods clean them, this could be why..?...to make it easier to keep it all on track and easier for members to post and follow etc...it also feels quite often that it's not really debate always...not countering the thoughts and opinions of others but more making judgements on the person or people with those opinions, if you know what I mean....I sometimes feel when a thread is closed....phewww, it'll be great to discuss other topics because that was an intense experience..... but then another race/immigration/religion etc type one seems to come and ..yeah, the same views obviously......and here we go again and it just doesn't give the best balance/variation and leave you really with anything much to say because you've already said it in another thread and many are so similar...(not you, I mean for me and maybe for others/I don't know..)....and also I think Iceman said, it often feels like people just wanting to get the last word and one up, type thing with each other or someone else so does that really leave it open for others to join in because their thoughts on the topic get a bit lost in all of it..../ thread derailments etc....it's all quite exhausting to follow and takes a lot of the inclination to post away...I also think that because it's quite often all repeated stuff etc..the thread gets closed because it's run it's course and just isn't 'debate' anymore and possibly hasn't been for several pages....
...anyway, that's all just my opinion and maybe another perspective of more an 'observer'....so yeah, sorry this is rushed, I just don't have a lot of time atm....

......(I'm so going to get sacked for being late..)...but I guess what I mean is that I appreciate your frustrations, when you're involved/absorbed in a thread and you've taken time to write posts and want to continue a discussion etc/don't want posts removed/don't want threads closed.. but they really are so often massively derailed so there are other frustrations with that for other posters as well and trying to find the track of the thread again ...and staff have to try to take in all of these perspectives/think about everyone and try to get and keep a balance ..

Ammi I don't disagree, threads do run their course and I don't really mind when they're closed once they start going around in circles, it's the actual deletions that bother me... As I post a fair bit on work days, which means I can get really into a debate sitting on the toilet in the morning (oh yes) and also on the commute to work, but then probably won't check in again until lunch time or maybe even dinner time, and a couple of times lately the thread has vanished by then... Or has been "pruned" into something so disjointed and confusing that it's impossible to read. So I don't even know what was said or what happened. It makes it really not worth getting involved in the first place. If it's just closed, that's fine, that's something to read! Usually something quite interesting!
Again though, I'm not telling anyone how to do anything (genuinely!), it's a privately owned site and totally up to the admins. I'm not in a huff! I just don't actually have huge amounts of free time and it seems like every thread on these topics goes belly up lately, and if it's going to be standard I just won't engage in the "immigration threads".
However I will say again that I think it would be a shame, because I think often those people involved in the more "heated" back and forth are actually enjoying it and I don't think it always needs to be nipped in the bud, I think for many it's an enjoyable part of the forum. Possibly worth mentioning that vBulletin also has a "split" function in the mod tools that can be used to siphon the posts in a thread that have gone off topic into a new thread, if it's still a valid and ongoing discussion. I think it's inevitable that "off topic" will happen... These threads are less a formal debate, and more like a heated discussion at a gathering of friends, and that sort of discussion will inevitably flow into completely different topics over the course of a few pages. Again though that's the site Admin's business. I really am only asking for my own selfish benefit :joker:.

I agree though, and ALL threads which are heavily debated/discussed are bound to get heated, the posts repetitive, and the arguments circular to a degree.
We all BELIEVE what we post and are passionate about our beliefs, so because we all have different beliefs on the same subject (wouldn't be a debate otherwise ) it's never going to be 'tea at the vicarage'.
I do not bear ill will or grudges and I'm sure no one else does, but certain people 'push my buttons' - as I'm sure that there are more than a few who I piss off, but that's a forum for you - a good active one with a high level of intelligence and knowledge anyway.

I wasn't going to add anything here but I can understand Toy Soldiers frustration.
I know the mods and admin have their work cut out at times to keep order and so if they decide to take any action as to a thread,I would always 100% support their doing so.
What Toy Soldier has listed, race, immigration and foreign policy, are massively polarising and emotive topics.
That really cover so much ground,it is not surprising thay move off and expand in all directions, while still having the basis of the issue left in place and to be referred to.
The reasons why people think as they do, can open up many other avenues of discussion and debate on such a thread, that doesn't really mean the thread is way off course however.
A daft example here but I was watching TV with my cousins, there were 6 of us,it was an event in Holby City, that started a discussion, from that event.
With all of us then contributing loads of other areas, which were covered and the discussions expanded onto several other points.
All that resulted just from the first comment of the event on that TV programme.
It was amazing what was learned and debated just from that and it went on for ages, even when we had a meal at night.
That is what debate is however.
A reaction to an event or issue with all that could be expanded on from that into other related points or from the comments made by the individuals.
If insulting comes into play as to others, well that is where the arguments are lost and then perhaps the thread and topic need to be closed at that time.
Serious debates, means just that, an issue that is serious, and people will have massively opposing views and passions for one side of the arguments as to them, as will those on the other side.
So the way I see it, is if an issue is raised and then comments flow in, it will be inevitable for the thread to move off into other things that others may see as to further valid points in relation to same.
If however on a thread, only a question is asked, then really only the question needs to be answered and to be at the forefront of everything said.
A topic opened up however, will have many side alleys of further points that can be made or brought into the conversation which will then expand the thread into an ongoing fully inclusive discussion from that basic topic raised at the start.

That is for sure an odd and surprising one Niamh,I myself don't think I have ever really reported a post as such.
Although there have been times I have got into some difficulty at times.

I usually try and just let it go. But lately it's become an issue. I've bumped the reminder in serious debates. Warned people in the threads. It's quite funny that a lot of 'sniping' threads start with 'It's quite funny' :hehe:
This is relevant to me lately due to the closing of my KH thread, It really annoys me when the old chestnut of it puts people off posting in SD comes up, those who post in SD do because they have an opinion on a subject, if anyone really wanted to have a say they would.
Kaz is right SD is becoming too clinical, yes I've reported posts and I make no apology for that if any thread gets personal then I would advocate that, yet the KH thread was effectively ethnically cleansed with all counter argument removed.. what's the point in that? It ceases to be a debate then.

That's just the point though. That thread was closed, cleaned, reopened a warning about it and then yet again reports come in. I don't understand why you don't get that. It was discussed in admin. To be fair though - a couple of us DO get too involved and the editing of the thread was no different to the way that similar threads had been 'cleansed' in the past, so I don't really understand the 'umbrage' at this one.
I have had long, detailed posts removed which were 99% relevant to the thread topic but transgressed on 1%, and I have had posts removed which left those I was debating with with the 'last word', and it's not a satisfying feeling when this happens, but hey, that's life. Best to move on and all learn from this.

I closed it because it was becoming. Place to snipe and have a dig. There was plenty of warning about that specific thread yet people blatantly ignored it.
You see I see that as a 'snipe', don't insult my intelligence because I didn't agree with your decision to close that thread.
It was a serious debates thread, there was no 'having a dig' if someone thought someone was posting rubbish and commented a counter argument then that's in the main what happened...The reports were if I remember due to one member spamming newspaper articles.
It was policed and closed, that's how I saw it because that's what happened from my perspective.
Personally I didn't blatantly ignore anything.

Yeah I agree with Eoin, it's become a problem lately and as Ammi said as well it's stopping other people from wanting to read and contribute to the Serious debate section because it just seems to become full of the same arguments and personal attacks between the same members
I get that, but where is the line? If it's only direct insults that's fine but then you have the problem of assumed insult e.g.
"I think that UKIP is essentially a xenophobic party and many UKIP members are racist."
"But I support UKIP so you are calling me a racist! Waaah!" *report*
Or
"I think that after the 2010 elections, believing a word of the Lib Dem manifesto would be incredibly naive... "
"I am voting Lib Dem how darest thee call me naive?? I have three degrees in astuteness! I'm going to report your face into the ****ing pavement you scum sucking waste of electoral roll space!"
... Well, you see my point. I might have gotten a little carried away there.
Maybe Niamh should just create her cage as a sticky thread at the top of the forum, and then as soon as threads start to kick off, the involved members get locked into that one thread until it's over? I reckon that would actually be possible with creative usergroup permissions, it could be hilarious :joker:.
"Kirk! Kizzy! BANISHED to the cage, don't come out until it's over or one of you is dead."
Niamh.

That's been discussed before actually, about having a kind of "argument thread" I can see the pros and cons but I think it'd just become a place where people would go to insult eachother and maybe even people who are not involved or don't want a non moderated section

It is genuinely not much fun after a while. Me and my wife owned and ran a forum (a parenting forum) of a similar size to TiBB for 3 years and eventually just gave it up, because it had simply become a chore and not enjoyable, and it was very low on active moderation and one completely unmoderated heated debates subforum. We trusted people to sort things out for themselves in time. With mixed results, to be fair, but it mostly worked quite well. Mostly.... lol.
I miss the "tech" side of running a forum, I really enjoyed messing around with the code and inventing my own stupid BBcodes and add-ons, but I do not miss the moderation side at all. The staff-only subforum got really bitchy at times... I wonder what's said about all of us in the tibby staff forum? :joker:

The emboldened text is - undoubtedly - a thinly veiled skit at me for no reason - but I am now in that all too familiar situation where I cannot defend my stance or really respond to you without aggravating the situation.
But to be honest here - you yourself started to turn that thread nasty for no reason when I posted:

And I wrote the above because your response GENUINELY did not address it and you were just making irrelevant comments. However; you responded - quite nastily for no reason - with:
"I responded to the relevant element. If you don't understand my post I'm not sure how I can simplify it any more without pictures."
Which is personal, deliberately demeaning and insults my intelligence.
And because I have learnt from similar incidents when I HAVE got drawn in and ended up infracted and banned, and because I did not want the thread to descend into the usual chaotic verbal slugfest (which is the direction it was going anyway) I reported you.
Whether that is solely what caused the thread to be closed or whether it was simply a contributory factor I don't know, and I don't really care.

We are a LOT more lenient in the serious debates forum than we are anywhere else, because of the nature of..a serious debate. We do understand that it sometimes getsb heated however many threads remain untouched despite becoming extremely heated
The problem comes when the posts become borderline (or actually racist)...and then we have to delete them, and then obviously other posts that quoted the deleted post, or posts that followed because without the offending post, the rest of it wouldn't make sense. When this happens, posts that otherwise are fine get deleted because without the deleted stuff it doesn't follow the discussion and would be confusing to people just reading the thread who hadn't seen all the hassle before deletion, if this makes sense.
Also we don't delete/ban/whatever simply because a post has been deleted, however, when one thread has a load of reports coming from it, from loads of different users, then you have a problem. Its obviously offending a lot of people with the direction its gone in, or the direction it was intended to go in.
In short, no threads like that aren't always going to be 'pruned'. And a great way to stop this happening (and I know this is hard, I have been known to reply to stuff I know I shouldn't before) is if you see a post that will obviously take the thread in the wrong direction or is outright offensive, completely ignore it (posting wise) and report it. This way when we deal with the report, if people have just ignored it, we wont have to delete huge chunks of conversation.

Yes, the thread descended in my absence then when I asked for it to be opened the offensive comments resumed. It's unfair on OPs especially of ongoing topics in serious debates that threads are closed due to personal remarks.
At times it seems it's the sole intention to not add to the debate but merely derail or close it.

I do understand the reasoning, I know that other members less cut out for the trenches of the SD threads that really get kicking also have to be considered and not just us loudmouthes who get off on spikey debate :joker:.
However I can't really get on bored with the "ignore and report" philosophy. The whole point of debate is to try your damnedest to change people's opinions, especially if you find them ugly (the opinions, not the people :hehe: ) and you can't do that if you refuse to respond to those opinions. Even worse if they get deleted really - feeling shut down or "forced" to keep those opinions to themselves just makes people incredulous, righteous, and cements those opinions in them. Pushes them down to sit quietly and fester and become even more toxic.
Obviously not the forum's responsibility but it is why I'll most likely have to avoid certain threads I think. I can't see things and not reply, I'd probably implode or something :(. And I certainly won't be reporting anything. Ew.

I understand that completely. However thats why huge chunks of threads get deleted, as those with offensive views (or who put them across badly) are in effect 'taken on'..and then we see a post that needs deleted and we have to delete everything along those lines.
I don't really see it as wasted posts, as those who were originally involved in the convo, still had that convo...if that makes sense. Its a bit like having a debate in real life, it still happened even though theres no record of it. I don't know if I'm putting my point across well here, but I know what I mean
Honestly, if I was a member I don't think I could ignore and report either. So its probably much better for me that I was made a mod as early as I was and HAD to learn to do that...otherwise I would probably be banned more often than most

Now that's honest, I get where you're coming from thankyou for Explaining it. I'm still wary of making threads in SD now though as if it does go pear shaped and I report it runs a real risk of being closed, wiped I can deal with as you know the stance of a few but there's no room for the thread to progress as with something that is constantly being updated in the media if it's closed.

There's not really much I can add tbh without repeating what Vicky, Nimah and Eoin has already said.
I completely understand how frustrating it can be if you have taken the time to be part of a debate, typed up long replies with your opinion then come back to find the thread removed, the thing is though, if we do get to the point where a thread needs closed (and we do try our best not to close them btw) and we do close it whilst leaving any argumentative/offending comments, we still tend to get reports over and over about them (yes even though the thread is closed) also as others have said (I think it was Ammi?) some members don't always have heated debates in here but they still read the threads and take part occasionally and when the threads are filled with the same people having the same aimed arguments like has been happening constantly lately hence the announcement about it at the top of this section it gets tedious for them to even read through and further deters them from taking part. (We have actually had reports and messages from members saying/complaining about this)
I know there was a thread the other day where some members were pissed off at comments being removed but they were removed as they were offensive or they were in reply to or quoting those posts, even though it's serious debates we still wont allow posts like that to remain, so to answer the question in the OP, no, threads wont get closed as soon as they become a little heated, but when comments that are discriminatory/offensive are being posted or members are sniping/baiting even after the thread has already been cleaned up with offending posts dealt with then yes that's when the threads will be closed/deleted, heated debate is perfectly fine but keeping the discussion civil and respectful is still expected otherwise the threads turn into a complete mess.
Kizzy...your thread was given plenty of chance, the thread was closed and cleaned, posts and members were dealt with yet still the sniping and numerous reports continued, making the debate redundant in our opinion.

Ignore the posts yes because a mod wouldn't have closed the thread had the discussion been moving along as normal AND there would have been no reports.
The solution for us was the thread was at an end and was closed, you being partly to blame for that btw.
And no it isn't a bit rich for people not involved to report. If they want to take part in a thread and get to the most recent posts and see it's just the usual bickering it ruins the thread for them.

'if you see a post that will obviously take the thread in the wrong direction or is outright offensive, completely ignore it (posting wise) and report it.'
Yes I reported a post as I've been advised by you and others in the past, had I known it would get the thread closed I might not have done.
The thread was not at an end as the story is still ongoing and the bigotry that it uncovered in this forum is evident.
(by the FMs in that thread)
So basically if someone doesn't want to participate in a thread they can just sit there pressing report ad get it closed?

It wasn't just reports that got the thread closed Kizzy. And the people reporting certainly were NOT reporting and ignoring post wise were they?
The discussion was at an end in that thread for the exact reasons you have been told numerous times, you already have another similar thread.
And no that's not what I said at all about people reporting since someone 'just sitting there pressing report' would be spamming the report system.

Right, I will report and ignore but it's very very hard!
It practically goes against every fibre of my being, you don't appreciate my sacrifices.

Well i can honestly say that i've never reported a post in my whole time on here and would'nt unless it was a direct threat to me.Being offended is part of life imo.I may not agree with everyone but who does?I think debating is basically just arguing by another name.Which is a good thing to get things off your chest and imo should be allowed to flow freely unless somebody is personally attacked.IMO.
