Poppy Smart, 23, accused builders of sexual harassment for wolf-whistling
Compared it to racial discrimination and asked other women to speak out
Building firm claims CCTV footage proves it was not one of their workers
Police investigated Ms Smart's complaint but took no further action
When Poppy Smart was wolf-whistled at by builders on her walk to work, she at first tried to ignore it.
But as the whistles and accompanying sexist comments turned into a daily ritual, the 23-year-old began to get upset.
Finally, after a month of unwanted attention from the men on the building site, the marketing co-ordinator decided she'd had enough – and called the police.

Well the title is misleading, "Poppy Smart, 23, accused builders of sexual harassment for wolf-whistling" if it were just that then I would agree it's an over reaction but blocking her way while making inappropriate comments everyday sounds like harassment to me

It seems from her selfies that she is fully aware that her tits are a means of getting attention but she has not yet worked out that she cant really pick and chose who gives her the attention?

again though standing in her way and blocking her is crossing the line, that's intimidating

are you ****ing kidding me? Men should be allowed to block a womans path as she's trying to go about her daily business because it's up to the woman to cross the street and get out of his path? Next you'll be telling me a woman deserves to be raped if she wearing a short skirt :/

Women enjoy being wolf-whistled at. Shocking as it is, simple creatures that we are, we appreciate the compliment. Like the cab driver calling you "love", or your boss complimenting you on your dress, it makes your day just a little bit nicer.
What it doesn't do is send you running, tearful, to the head of Human Resources, or prompt you to lock yourself in the ladies' loo, feeling bruised or degraded

Cant believe the bollocks I've read in this thread tbh.
The girl had every right to complain, as does anyone that is made to feel anxious/uneasy/intimidated whilst going about her own business.
Wolf whistling once or twice isn't too bad I guess but doing it to the same girl routinely then escalating it by blocking her path and so on isn't alright and anyone thinking otherwise is part of the bigger problems that women face every day.
I'm genuinely wondering how many fathers/grandfathers/brothers would think this was 'over reacting' if it was their own female relative that was being objectified and hounded with unwanted attention by a group of immature men

Wolf-whistle backlash: Police and woman under fire after complaint about builders
West Mercia chiefs were accused of getting their priorities wrong after sending officers to probe Poppy Smart’s claims of sexual harassment.
The 23-year-old marketing assistant complained after hearing the “disrespectful” calls as she passed the site in Worcester on her way to work.
But Philip Davies, who is seeking re-election as Tory MP for Shipley, West Yorkshire, said: “I would have thought the police have better things to do.
“I don’t know how many burglaries there are to investigate in Worcester, but there are probably quite a few.
“I’m sure the public would feel safer if police devoted more time to investigating them.”
His views were echoed by Worcester residents who used social media to rant about the “waste of money”. :clap1:

You don't see the lady bits on page 3 so i don't think a big 'ol 'knob' would be allowed to be honest,Or a big 'ol minge.I did once see a flap poking out when they forgot to airbrush it out though.I would'nt get offended if there was a topless bloke on page 4 tbh,Infact i bet there's already plenty in that showbiz section for women.

Because a lot of "hard working chaps" get off on making people (both women AND other men) feel uncomfortable and intimidated, is the sad truth that I'm sure you don't want to hear.
Anyone who has read many of my posts knows that I am far from being "a feminist" but I see this more or less every day. Burly dirty faced red nosed big chavs trying to make themselves feel big by intimidating people. With women they add the pervy aspect but they'll do it to pretty much anyone. They don't get very far with it at my place of work, mind.
This isn't all manual labourers by the way but it's enough for it to be frequent.

Poppy Smart, 23, claims her walk to work is also being ruined as she is subjected to "disrespectful" comments, that she likened to racial discrimination.
It is very disrespectful and is comparable to calling out at someone of a different race or religion."
'He was probably 18 or 19 and got right in my face, standing next to an older man. He didn't touch me but they were in my personal space in the pavement, in my way, even though I literally blanked him. It is incredibly intimidating. I'm quite a nervous person and this has made my anxiety worse.
'The whistling went on for a month. I eventually contacted the building company and the police on the same day when it got so bad. I even considered changing my route to work but thought, 'Why should I do that?'

What a stupid girl she must be, she honestly expected grown men to control themselves and not intimidate her on a regular basis? Silly girl, if she doesn't want attention from men she should change her route regularly and dress like a nun. She shouldn't expect men to be able to show a modicum of control or respect towards her because she has tits and we all know that men aren't responsible for their own actions when it comes to a pair of boobs. It's her own fault for having them tbh.

Kind of reminds of this, it's like this sexual sense of entitlement some lads seem to get and I stress some cos a lot of lads aren't like that and it gives us a bad name especially those with trade backgrounds.

Whether some women are abusive or insulting to some men has no bearing on this case.
If a woman was being assaulted by her partner, would you say "Well we're not doing anything about this because last week I saw a woman being abusive to a man".
You're so simplistic, narrow minded and fail to look at things outside of your own bubble.

Because the Truth is a meninist and like all meninists they can't handle the fact that the universe doesn't revolve around them. Women's rights? Pfft, WHAT ABOUT MEN'S RIGHTS? We get a higher rate of pay then women in the same role but who cares about that when men are all that matters? Women should be happy that they can vote and we let them out the house without a leash.
Gay rights? even mentioning those two words count as bigotry against the beleagured heteros of the world! It doesn't matter that the gays don't have equal rights, we can deal with that after we deal with all the slight problems straight white men have to suffer with first! Straight white men come first, everyone else is a second class citizen who doesn't matter.

A firm word from the police should suffice, but if they continue then more fool them as they could be arrested and charged with a host of sexual harassment charges.

Nah I don't think she should feel like she has to alternate her route to avoid potentially oppressive situations. You can pretty much read what Niamh said verbatim for my opinion.
As for calling the cops, if tomorrow she doesn't get any hastle she might argue it was worth it. Personally an anonymous phone call complaint to the contractors head office first might have solved it (she did both at the same time) but she had this problem for a month. I imagine she would have been pretty angry.

...hmm, these things are always interesting though because if it's a perceived attractive female then it's often...well what does she expect, t'is men just being men as opposed to disrespectful idiots being disrespectful idiots and really she needs to look at herself/her confidence/and what she's wearing etc...and if it's a female that's not perceived as so physically attractive, it's often, well goddamn she should think herself lucky to get comments in her face....the females lose and the females lose/zero points to the females..but no, it's not a gender thing though, it's an idiot thing and a disrespect thing ...

The whole "they should take it as a compliment" thing is definitely not a gender thing, not these days anyway. I actually had to have words with a trainee staff member recently (which is unusual, I have a very laid back management style hactually :joker: ) for basically constantly perving at a young male customer's legs when he comes in in football shorts. Making loud comments and what can only be described as "purring" at the poor lad. He was laughing and smiling but to me, he also looked seriously uncomfortable... Theres nothing wrong with flirting but people need to get much, much better at reading body language and stop when someone is clearly not happy about it.

Yep it can happen from both sides, we should try to keep gender out of it really because all men or all builders (as in this case) aren't all like that, I'd like to think most men have more respect and wouldn't intimidate someone like that

Wolf-whistling builder accused of sexual harassment boasts it has helped him 'snog so many women' and brands his target 'a silly little girl' (but admits he DOES have a girlfriend)
A builder who wolf-whistled a young woman only to be accused of sexual harassment said today she is a 'silly little girl' who was 'lucky' to have received the attention.
Ian Merrett, 28, is astonished that Poppy Smart, 23, did not take it as a compliment, which he says has helped him 'snog loads of girls' in the past.
The builder and his colleagues whistled at her every day for a month as she passed their Worcester construction site.
Miss Smart, who compared the wolf-whistling to racial discrimination, eventually filmed them and asked West Mercia Police to investigate alleged sexual harassment.
Mr Merrett admits it was probably him whistling but called Miss Smart a 'silly little girl' who should never have gone to the police.
He said: 'I'm sure if she walks past again and she is lucky she will get wolf-whistled again. I have wolf-whistled so many girls and got so many birds and snogged so many girls off the back of that, and never had a complaint before. But I've got a girlfriend so need to be careful what I say'.

Would she be likely to walk past and be harassed by a pub full of football fans every single morning on her way to work?
No. :smug:
We're not talking about a one off nuisance easily forgotten about but persistent harassment.

Ok, so not many things pull my attention like this article in the papers recently. After doing a quick search on the article i found this forum thread and after a while reading all the comments just had to reply...
So yes, im new here. Hi.
Since the dawn of man, women and their beauty have been worshiped in one form of another, and since as long as i can remember, wolf whistling has been a sign of a compliment for the working class men to use. I'm male and believe it or not on occasion in my youth i've had women whilste at me from their cars. I've always taken it as a compliment as i'm sure many women feel the same. There is zero justification for this individual wasting police time for wolf whistling.
However...
If this has been persistent, then ideally she ought to just ask them to stop. There are so many options available that could be addressed long before "using the sledgehammer to crack the walnut" approach. I'm sure many of you ask people to stop tapping a pen on a desk when it annoys you, ask people to stop humming and so forth. It's a simple enough request and with manners nobody takes offence. I'm sure you get the point.
If they physically blocked her access, once again no excuse for this, but i find it very difficult to believe that two builders would prevent a woman from walking down the road without physically touching her, that could border on assault, at which we would be looking at a different charge altogether.
You can take alot of example from films over the decades of men whistling at women that look attractive, have all features in the right places that men find enticing... take Pretty Woman featuring Julia Roberts after she goes on her shopping spree... she knows she looks good, she knows she flaunting it and she enjoys the attention from various men.
This girl Poppy is most DEFINITELY flaunting it, id hazard a guess a girl of her demographic has Facebook, Instagram and so forth, and it's highly likely she uploads images of herself, her friends and so forth. I'd go as far to say some of these pictures flaunt her assets... as Facebook, Instagram own the rights to any images uploaded to their platforms, she can't argue about who can and can't compliment her image, assets and so forth.
If you don't want to be noticed and whistled at, don't make yourself noticeable.
Niamh.

Welcome to the forum Kitchenspoon.
I guess the difference is that this was an on going thing for that girl, day in day out and not just a once in a while type thing? Also, following her and blocking her path is intimidating, I'm guessing you're a guy so maybe you don't understand how that could be intimidating for a girl walking on her own? Maybe if it were your sister or cousin or daughter in that situation you'd feel differently? Also, why do you suppose she'd go so far as to report it to the Police if she didn't feel harassed by it?

I think the whole thing (her reporting it, not taking a different road etc) tells you a lot more about her tbh
We only have her word for the blocking thing. She seems to be, as i said before, a piece of work.
Any other girl would have ignored, it, changed route, told them to feck off etc
but for some reason she decided to go to the police who rightly told her to do one in a polite and official manner
No one is excusing the oiks but oiks exist and she needs to get a bit more street savvy and realistic
also maybe get her hair styled :umm2:

If it's ongoing i can understand that it would be annoying, especially with men ogling at her and undressing her with their eyes. However, as i mentioned, there were many options available to her before contacting the police. By all accounts it appears none of these avenues were explored. If she felt uncomfortable physically walking on site, or perhaps turning around and asking them to stop, the majority of sites have board up with company names, numbers and so forth. It's evident she has a phone, and it's evident she knows how to use it so surely she could of made a phone call?
Yes i am a guy, and i have a daughter, and obviously being a father, i'd be uncomfortable hearing men wolf whistling at my daughter, i would be even more annoyed if it was consistent. However, manners cost nothing, and nor does asking other people politely that something is not welcome. You'd be surprised how accommodating the regular jo can be when a stranger doesn't like something.
I live in a world where wolf whistling is natural and an acceptable part of society, it's is complimentary, and if seen as anything else other than that has lived in a box for the last century.
This is a snippet of information on the origin of the wolf whistle...
The wolf-whistle originates from the navy General Call made with a boatswain's pipe. The general call is made on a ship to get the attention of all hands for an announcement. Sailors in harbour would whistle the general call when seeing a pretty woman to draw fellow sailors' attention to her. It was eventually picked up by passers-by, not knowing the real meaning of the whistle, and passed on. Over time, the precise tones of the general call were flattened somewhat into the wolf whistle common today.[citation needed] Today, cat-calling or wolf-whistling can be considered a form of sexual harassment.
The action of wolf whistling is really down to interpretation. I see it as a way to get a womans attention and let her know that i like her, i think she's pretty and such. Many would agree with this.

Is it really a natural and acceptable part of society anymore though? I don't know tbh. Now look, as I said it wouldn't bother me that much personally if it were just whistling but I know if it happened to me I would think "****ing idiots" rather than "Oh wow I must look amazing today"
You know up until not that long ago grabbing your secretaries ass was perfectly acceptable too (I watch Mad Men you know :P )
As for whether or not she should have went to the company first rather than the Police, that's debatable, if a person is feeling intimidated or harassed, the first port of call is usually the police not the persons employer
