doctor says her tragic death was probably partly caused by excessive chewing of gum
this causes low salt , magnesium and calcium in her body resulting in swelling of the brain etc
Ive had some experience of over chewing gum and it gave me major sinus problems which were ignored by the doctor but discovered by the dentist who said the excessive chewing affected my jaw line blocked my sinuses thus creating excessive mucus and it also caused swelling in my jaw thus further restricting my breathing
beware excessive chewing gum, humans were made to eat and chew food which takes a short amount of time chewing, we are not designed to chew for hours....gum is an unnatural product and can be dangerous
But it wasn't chewing gum that was the root cause, it was the artificial sweeteners it contained that are being linked to her death

the articifical sweeteners were in the gum..plus the other side effects ive mentioned were probably prevalent, over chewing is dangerous

Oh wait ok I read it and it says 16 pieces and it was the sweeteners in it that caused the low mineral levels, I have like 6 pieces a day that I'll just chew for ages
the articifical sweeteners were in the gum..plus the other side effects ive mentioned were probably prevalent, over chewing is dangerous
It doesn't alter the fact that chewing didn't kill her, they are linking the lack of minerals to the presence of artificial sweeteners. Its a rather large and important differentiation.

'Dr Griffiths told the inquest he would be filing a “yellow form report” to the UK’s Drug Monitoring Unit to flag up a possible harmful reaction from large amounts of everyday sweeteners such as aspartame which are in chewing gum and fizzy drinks and diet products.
He said he examined Trident chewing gum and found it to contain sweeteners like sorbitol and aspartame – ruled safe by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) here and also by authorities in the USA.'
I don't know why they're focssing so much on the brand of gum, all sugar free products use these artificial sweetners, it's been known for years that they're unsafe but the diet industry is big business.

There's nothing wrong with chewing gum - it is EXCESSIVE chewing of gum which is potentiality dangerous.
As with gambling, drinking of alcohol, eating - even sex - it is a lack of moderation which is the problem.

Are there warnings to be printed on packets of gum then?

Unfortunately - YES - because it seems some of the public are so moronic they NEED a nanny state to do their thinking for them.
Common Sense seems NOT to be so common now.

I don't know how anyone can excessively chew though.
I get bored of gum after about 15 minutes. And it leaves the worst aftertaste. :yuk:

Should people just assume that chewing gum will kill you, how would you instinctively know how much is too much without guidelines?
Gum is not an addictive or controlled substance, why would anyone think to limit their intake?
If it contains a substance which could be seriously detrimental to health then there should be information provided that makes the consumer aware of that, being unaware of the facts does not make anyone a moron.
We are regularly told via advertising of sugar free gum to 'eat drink chew' IS the common sense thing to do after meals to neutralise plaque acids.

Too much of ANYTHING is harmful to health, including Water, Salt and Labour Voters  (Joke)
Seriously Kizzy, I think that 14 sticks of gum per day, each and every day,for God knows how long, is excessive, and this 'Death By Excess' is becoming more and more frequent, from 'Slimming Product' overdoses to 'Death By Chocolate', but surely, it should be common sense to know when something's excessive.
Anyway, it looks as if we have to print warning labels on everything, then so be it.

One person dies from excessive gum chewing and now we all need a warning on the packet?

No need for common sense then, the government can tell us everything we can and can't do. Sorted...

Why all the mockery? Why on earth would anyone have any idea that 14 sticks of gum would kill them?... They wouldn't, it's not common sense to know that it would either :/
If there's a risk damn right there should be an appropriate warning yes, ignorance is not bliss unless you believe in a true blue mushroom existence.

14 sticks of gum didn't kill her.
14 sticks of gum every single day for many YEARS did. anything in excess can kill you, everyone knows that.

I'm commenting on the thread, I thought having a say on the topic was kind of the point here.
Yes, if there is an issue surrounding the use of artificial sweeteners let's have a warning on the products containing them, recommended daily consumption guidelines maybe, I'd consider that ethical.

Yes, everyone was just having their say... and some of us were disagreeing with you. That's what debate is all about.
I don't agree with trying to legislate for the stupidest, most over-indulgent people in society. It doesn't work because stupid, over-indulgent people are so ingenious.

it said it caused her malnutrition low levels of nutrients, like potassium etc... you can't get mal nutrition from one day chewing gum. it must have been over a long time to get her levels that low.
It sounded to me like she was chewing gum as part of an eating disorder. many anorexics and bulimics use chewing gum to curb their hunger and satisfy their oral fixations. and malnutrition is why many people with eating disorders die, especially from lack of potassium.

It doesn't take years to die from malnutrition either though.
If that was a contributory factor I'm sure that would've been picked up at the autopsy?

the excessive chewing causes the sinus problems too, that alone can be dangerous over extended periods.
