That'll probably have been what the PR people made him say in order to protect One Direction's market share - make it look amicable even if it's not. They said Siobhan Donaghy was leaving the Sugababes for a career in fashion and Mutya Buena was leaving to focus on being a mum - they both went on to release solo albums not long afterwards. It's just standard pop music excuses.

It was just standard "friends forever!" PR spin to try and protect the legacy of the band so that they can continue to spin money out of the remaining four for at least one more album and maybe a Greatest Hits before they all end up quitting. I do believe that he quit because he wasn't able to handle the pressure of being in the bubble of modern day Beatlemania but I don't believe that he wanted to be a "normal" 22 year old, I think he just wanted to have a life and be able to see his fiancée and earn more of the profits from being a solo artist.
