View Full Version : Rylan - "We’ve got stereotypes"
Jason.
09-05-2015, 06:08 PM
We’ve got young, middle-aged and older, and although we’ve got stereotypes, they don’t fit the bracket they’re in. For example, a young, pretty girl might not be what she seems.
http://www.bbspy.co.uk/bb16/news/0505/big-brother-2015-timebomb-to-have-real-mix-of-housemates-old-young-recognise-some-from-papers-tv#ixzz3ZfKTZw00
I'll start.
Angry black girl.
Thick "loveable" Essex geezer.
Blonde girl with big tits getting booed on the way in.
Fat girl who claims to be "doing it for all the other big girls".
Person who promises to stir **** up on VT but turns out to be a bore.
Flamboyant gay.

Sadly we're beginning to follow the American model of inflexible stereotyping.
Will.
09-05-2015, 06:11 PM
i guess if they dont fit the bracket then there not really the typical stereotypes
Benjamin
09-05-2015, 06:11 PM
If they could have a "straight" acting gay and a loveable black girl for once would be nice and surely not too much to ask.

I'm personally rather tired of being supposedly 'represented' by over the top flamboyant gays all the time on these shows.
Jason.
09-05-2015, 06:23 PM
BB15 had a lot of stereotypes in the cast looking back:
Angry black females - Pauline and Toya
Slutty slapper - Biannca
Blonde woman with big tits - Tamara
Thick Essex geezer - Winston
Camp gay - Mark and Matthew
Innocent 18 year old - Ashleigh
Steven fitted into a stereotype, I'm just not sure which one.

I remember on BOTS they showed the results of the housemates IQ tests, and he was quiet high up, actually.
I remember it was in the following order from intelligent to least intelligent:
Ash
Chris
Pav
Winston
Ashleigh
Christopher
Helen
Mark
I was surprised Ash was the highest, but I wouldn't really call him stupid. But then again, I'd take these with a pinch of salt, as you've seen what type of questions they ask.
I'm pretty sure "What came first, the chicken or the egg?" is an accurate measure of intellect.

How am I being homophobic?
When did I ever claim I was afraid or had immense hatred towards homosexuals, or that straight people were more superior.
Were just talking about stereotypes present on a reality show.
Be careful with your accusations.

How was she going to do it privately, on the BB15 Whats App group chat?
In all fairness, I'm not condoning it, but Matthew and Toya instigated that argument. Bringing her past into the argument and referring to a human as "it" is disrespectful.
Not to mention, implying they have AIDS as they had to share a toilet with her.

I can't think of a single series I've watched that hasn't had stereotypes, this isn't anything new.
What does straight acting even mean? Do they need to eat pussy?
It's a really annoying term tbh. and A gay guy is only "straight acting" if he's getting off with girls and not guys. A gay guy being masculine doesn't make him "straight acting", just like a straight guy who's effeminate (yes, there are plenty) isn't "gay acting".

Sorry, what I meant was that he didn't fall under the 'straight-acting' (as silly and meaningless as that term is) category. There's nothing wrong with being camp, and it should be embraced if it's part of a person's personality, but it would be nice if gay people weren't exclusively characterized as camp/flamboyant in Big Brother UK. In my opinion, that in itself is making a mockery of the gay community.

One of the first steps to getting rid of stereotypes is to stop using the term "straight acting", as that itself perpetuates the "straight = masculine, gay = feminine" stereotypes that we're talking about. Using that term when talking about how you're tired of stereotypes being over-represented is counter-productive, I feel.
I definitely agree with the sentiment, though. Non-stereotypical gay guys should definitely be represented more in Big Brother (alongside those who happen to be more camp of course, the solution isn't to act like camp gays don't exist, but to acknowledge that they're not the only ones who do). :)

What about her threatening to slit Perez's throat?
I don't agree with you on everything BB6, but I completely agree with that.
:clap1: I consider myself a feminist even, but the argument goes both ways. You can't vilify a man and not a woman for the same actions.
Absolutely true.

I'm just saying.
A woman who actually physically assaulted someone is supported, but a man who makes a threat, is vilified.

Conor the rapist :bored:
Also on the lines of women saying things and getting entirely away with them - Katie Hopkins making fun of Perez's penis? I mean emasculating him in the process to begin with but also being so uneducated that she has to resort to insults stuck in the gender binary, is disgusting.
Also if Grace was a guy and had chucked water all over Susie? Things would've been a lot different. Sexism is a brutal thing folks, and it works both ways.

Agreed again.
It reminds me of Spitgate when Bex got in Mohamed's face, but when he stood his ground he was accused of "squaring up to a girl". None of the Whisper Club cretins even acnowledged that she got in his face to begin with.

This.
It's like how women get away with flirting with younger males. See Edwina Currie, in IAC.
Yet, Chris in BB15 is branded all sorts just for being friends with a female housemate who is 18 years of age.
And I'm not even a fan of Chris.

Cami was a cartoon caricature with parodied Bad Girls Club styled expressions, let's not make out she was the threatening big bad wolf, because if she was BB would have stepped in - like they did with Conor.
And end of the day, insinuating that Cami's actions aren't as signficant as those of Conor's is also just promoting benevolent sexism - viewing women as sweet innocent people who cannot by any means be a threat to men.
Jason.

Honestly, I don't remember much about what Cami was like, but benevolent sexism and sexism for both genders due to society's structures is a real thing and very relevant in the context of social experiments such as Big Brother

Yes.
Exactly.
A woman does it, and it's seen as harmless cougar flirting.
If a man dares to do it, it's seen as dare I say it, creepy pedophilia, or something along the lines of that.
Daniel.

It wasn't an insult.

What else did you expect me to think?
Yes.
Exactly.

But again, that's an example of benevolent sexism because it's insinuating that women are too 'weak' (albeit not so overtly) to be able to be threatening to a male. Very frustrating as benevolent sexism is one of the hardest forms of sexism to tackle as it's articulated in the form of praise, hence making it that much more important to discuss.

In the house though, I don't care how they are outside the house, and anyway I don't even like Cami Li that much at all, just she was no where near as bad as Helen.

It probably has a lot to do with what Conor said in the house versus what Cami did outside of the house. Cami legit assaulted somebody, but because we didn't see it televised with some dramatic music and reaction shots of other housemates, a lot of people aren't really going to be able to care as much as they would if it was on t.v. It's a sad truth, but were more emotionally attached to things that we experience "firsthand."
And I would definitely say that most of Cami's comments against Alicia and Perez were just as bad as Conor's comments against Deana, but another factor that could go into more people supporting Cami while hating Conor, is the fact that Cami went against Perez (who was ****ing hated on an entirely new level) making Cami's actions in the house seem more acceptable.
Hating on Conor for what he said, while not being bothered by what Cami did makes no sense to me, but there are a ton of factors that go into housemate likability and they aren't inherently sexist.
Not to say that there isn't an obvious girl oriented support base on this forum, but even that probably has more to do with production and casting. Things really aren't that black and white or simple

I agree.
I think with the point in bold, it's more double standards which exists within the viewers.
If a housemate goes against another housemate you dislike, one is more likely to find their behaviour acceptable, as it fits in with your opinion. Helen vs. Ashleigh, from BB15 being perfect example of this.
But, if a housemate goes against your favourite housemate, one is more likely to go against that person.

BB15 had a lot of stereotypes in the cast looking back:
Angry black females - Pauline and Toya
Slutty slapper - Biannca
Blonde woman with big tits - Tamara
Thick Essex geezer - Winston
Camp gay - Mark and Matthew
Innocent 18 year old - Ashleigh
Steven fitted into a stereotype, I'm just not sure which one.
Matthew isnt gay and Ashleigh wasnt innocent, slapper is not a stereotype.
Jason.
