Social media has rounded on a "cruel" Mother's Day prank that happened on Cambodian television.

Autumn Allen, 13, appeared on MyTV variety show Penh Chet Ort and was told that she would be reunited with her mother.

Allen - who moved from the US to Cambodia with her father in 2008 - has not seen her mother since she was 6 years old, reports The Phnom Penh Post.

"My mother last held and kissed me and told me that she would always love me," Allen recalled.

A comedian dressed in drag came onto the stage instead, leaving Allen stunned but for the wrong reasons.

Numerous people on Allen's Facebook page criticised MyTV for the joke and posted encouraging messages to the teenager.

"They showed no respect for you, Autumn," read one comment. "You deserve better than that... You stay the same person that you are - a beautiful young woman who loves people, loves music with a passion and who loves Cambodia."

MyTV has since issued a public apology, and Allen also revealed she spoke with the hosts in person.

"I have met with MyTV and accepted their sincere apologies," she wrote.

"The two hosts, Rolin and Taboi, have apologised to me personally. Even the deputy general manager of MyTV was there.

"A mistake happens, and I have forgiven them. Thank you for everyone's support. Please find it in your heart to forgive them, too."

This....who in their right mind would ever think that could be a funny "prank" to play on anyone, let alone a child

That's one of the nastiest things I've ever heard. I hope they get taken off air, absolutely vile.. I can't imagine how she must have felt.

I don't even get how this even happened :/ Did nobody think 'wait this little girl seems to have been through a lot in her life should we not actually help her find her real mum?'. Instead they thought to make some sort of laughing stock of her. Atrocious
