Couldn't use Windows 9 due to old companies being lazy and having a "If Windows version begins with 9_ script" it would have resulted in a number of bugs lol. So they went straight to 10.

Does anyone know what the deal is regarding re-installation? I build my own PC's so my hardware changes fairly regularly and, for that reason I have Retail Windows 8.1 rather that OEM...
If I accept the free upgrade from 8.1 to 10, does that mean I get retail 10 so can reinstall it when I change hardware? Or is it going to be locked to my current PC? And if it is... is it going to kill my 8.1 retail license?? Also, if it isn't locked to one PC, whenever I need to do a fresh wipde of the HD am I going to need to install 8.1 from the DVD and then download the upgrade all over again? Hmmmm.
So many questions and the answers don't seem to be available anywhere.

This is my concern really, or rather, that accepting the windows 10 upgrade will invalidate my 8.1 retail serial. Although, it does say that you can upgrade after a year, so I could just leave it until my next motherboard/processor upgrade (early 2016 probably) and then do it. Hardware lock is tied to the motherboard, if there is one, and I suppose I'll just have to suck up the cost of a full retail copy before I change it again.
Still hoping it's like-for-like though and I get a retail serial for 10 in exchange for retail 8.1... it would only be fair! I mean, they owe me! I actually paid MONEY for Windows 8.1. A feat I never accomplished with Windows 7. Or XP. ...or 98 :joker:. I paid for those with Pieces of Eight. Arrrr...

this has done something really bad to my laptop... i was on 7 before and now i've installed it i keep getting a blue screen error with the message "system_service_exception" and i think something like ks.sys? which I believe is a Skype problem? And it just says it's gathering info and has to restart, and it's an endless cycle
except it's sort-of-stopped now after last time i tried to uninstall skype but it didn't work bc it's just loaded AHHHHHHHHHHH

Why would anyone voluntarily be a free beta tester for Microsoft? Think I'll be sensible and leave it for 6 to 9 months and let you guys iron out the bugs :joker:.
Although I do have a windows 8 laptop kicking around somewhere, I could test it on that I suppose... Just to be nosy...

Telling you, you'll get bugs all over the place for at least 6 months to a year. Also, it auto-updates and you can't stop it, and every time it does you might get brand new security loopholes and more bugs. You're volunteering to beta-test the software... for free...
There's nothing functionally wrong with Windows 8.1 if you get Start8 (windows 7 style start menu for windows 8.1), boot directly to desktop and forget the tablet-style mess running in the background exists. It really only needs a bit of tweaking.
My only concern is that DX12 is going to be Windows 10 exclusive, that might eventually force me to "upgrade".

Not sure if its been officially stated but numerous places say DX12 is exclusive to Windows 10. Which is a bit of a bummer.

It definitely is windows 10 exclusive, but it should be at least a year before there are any releases where that really matters. Anything released before then will have been built primarily for DX11 so there's still time to let most of the bugs get ironed out before upgrading. If worst comes to worst I'll just dual-boot.
