The search for a new webslinger is finally over - 19-year-old British actor Tom Holland has been cast as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Holland, star of The Impossible and Wolf Hall, is expected to make his superhero debut in Captain America: Civil War before leading Marvel and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man reboot.

The latter will debut in cinemas on July 28, 2017 with Cop Car director Jon Watts on board to direct.

Holland and Watts's untitled film will be produced by Marvel's Kevin Feige and former Sony chief Amy Pascal.

Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures, said of the studio's new look Spider-Man: "It's a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that's why their results are so outstanding. I'm confident Spider-Man will be no exception.

"I've worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom's screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start."

eige added of Watts's appointment as director: "As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring."

Pascal heaped praise on the new Peter Parker, describing Holland as a "vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world".

"With Tom, we've found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man's story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe," she said.

It's quite weird that they actually got someone age appropriate to play him, he's gonna look like a newborn next to the other avengers.

I'm confused. Did they even finish the "Amazing Spider-Man" story, last I heard they were yet to introduce Mary Jane and now they're starting from the beginning..... again.

What's the point? idgi

Here here.

I only liked the first Toby Maguire movie and the rest is crap.

Even then Macy Gray stole the show. :smug:

so true :joker:

Daredevil has ruined all other superhero series for me...

It is the closest I have seen to the real darkness that is in most comic story lines

The second one was the lowest grossing Spiderman movie so far, wasn't received very well by critics, and there was some kind of disagreement between Andy Garfield and the studio.

Haven't seen this new guy in anything before but I think it's a good idea to reboot it and throw him in with the rest of the Avengers.

He's supposed to be 15 when he first becomes Spiderman, it's a fault of the previous movies casting actors that are too old rather than this one casting someone that is too young.
