great news. Sunday is just another day and the sooner people start working at weekends the better for the economy.

I think it's a shame. Even for people who aren't religious, wouldn't it be nice to have one day a week where you can just live? People used to take their kids to the park or somewhere on Sundays, now they take them round the shops and buy them stuff.

then get a choice of a weekday off.

Shops are already open Sundays round here.Asian shops are open until 11pm and supermarkets until 4pm.A few hours more would'nt make much difference tbf.As long as staff get paid overtime and some weekends off.

About bloody time! I think opening hours in this country are pretty ridiculous. There could be so many more job opportunities available if shops stayed open later for just a few hours a week.

I agree, in fact it's a similar way in how I feel about Christmas etc I'm not religious but it's a time where we can just stop and spend some quality time with family

Having worked in a supermarket, I can guarantee that there will be uproar about this and then people will just work the hours because it's better than getting sacked :laugh:
The supermarkets will be able to make the staff work the Sunday night hours because of the clause in all retail contracts that says something like "you may be asked to work extra hours to suit the needs of the business." You kind of can't get out that.

From a secular point of view, I disagree with Sundays being the only day in which you can have a day off, on the basis that some religions believe different days are rest days (eg. Seventh Day Adventists believe saturdays).

I also think that everyone should have one day a week where they know they aren't working, so maybe companies can now re-jig it and have different people having different days off.. also meaning they will probably have to employ more staff, so thats more unemployment reduction.

Now after writing all that, believe it or not.. I actually quite like this change tbh :shrug:

My own Sabbath is Saturday. That said, and as I live in the UK, I would like Sundays to be a day where people can be with their family and take the day off. Nothing to do with religion... there needs to be time when the bustle stops for a few hours.

Meh. I work a 13-hour shift two or three Sundays a month (alternating weekends). So I'm all for it. Misery loves company :joker:.

That said, it's going to cause a bit of a problem in Scotland if they don't get this Sunday rail service dispute sorted. All of the shops will be open, but no one will be able to get to them!

Well that's just it really isn't it - it is quite a generational thing. For better or worse Sunday is not the day it was when literally everything ground to a halt - it's already moved on so much from that that this is not even a big leap. Ultimately things change - we're already far removed from the real reason for taking Sundays off where it was even sinful to play sport etc. on that day. And even that was a product of puritanism and was not so prominent in this country before the 1600s. Today is very different - consumerism triumphs and people don't live their lives by a rigid Monday-Friday schedule. This would only really reflect the reality of life for a lot of people.
