View Full Version : Is being thick a requirement to be on reality tv?

I've often been gobsmacked at how thick many of the people are who appear on reality tv. The cast of TOWIE, Geordie Shore, BB (although there has been exceptions on that show) and now Love Island. The Love Island housemates were asked when was the Battle of Hastings and couldn't answer and some didn't even know that Great Britain wasn't just one country!!
Reality tv seems to be sending the message that it's alright to be dim, just so long as you get your face on tv.

I've long thought this and it seems the thicker they are the more they are liked, BB seems to find mega thick HM's usually - marc being a refreshing change to the normal morons selected - Danny boy a good case because he is dumb beyond belief

Sometimes they put it on, however in Danny's case he really is a dumbass.

I just think nowadys people think it's cool to pretend to be stupid and find it embarrasing to show any sign of education.

Don't ask me why, this country is dead and there's no coming back so who cares?

Probably not a requirement :joker: but I think 2 things;
1: Thick people generally won't have many other opportunities to make money so a higher ratio of applicants will be stupid by default. The clever people will be busy working/studying etc and probably don't have the option to take 10 weeks off to sit in house with TV cameras.
2: Reality TV tends to cater towards a low common denominator, ie. thick people, who don't want to watch clever people and feel patronized.
(All massive generalisations, obviously there are exceptions)

The viewing demographic of course does come into it with these lower end reality shows. Some exceptions of course. :cheer2:

It's certainly a requirement for being a Labour MP.

Imagine if next time, they have intelligent, well-qualified people who are well travelled and well read, amusing, interesting and even beautiful. How much better would that be than the dickhead's we're currently subjected to?

Yes. People find stupidity endearing. Look at how most viewers found it funny and cute that Danny had trouble spelling the word 'canoe.' Look at how former winners like Josie, Brian Bello, and Charlotte from CBB are revered and adored.

Intelligent housemates are too intimidating for the audience. People want to feel like they are smarter than the next person. So basically the public tend to feel threatened by individuals who have knowledge on a comprehensive set of issues.

It started with Jade really. People saw how popular she became with all her "east angular" nonsense etc and copied it.

Belo played it best. As did sophie in bb10.

I agree with all except your Danny and the canoe spelling. Practically everyone here called him thick as pig ****e or a dumb twat. Maybe that is just Danny dislike though. As to viewers, we just do not know.

Yeah you definitely have to do the lowest common denominator stuff depending on what contest you're on, you dare to be different and you lose, it's the simple thing that will be a challenge for Jack on Thursday.

It is like watching an episode of Jeremy Kyle. You think, what scummy low life and then think how lucky you are. And then you think that these people are able to vote. Even worse, you can be pretty sure that you know which party that they would vote for. If they could be arsed!

The viscous vs the vicious seems to be the recipe for reality shows.

great post - BB is the only reality TV i watch - these other shows prove my point - you have to be of very little intellect to get on them or you can be like joey - and act silly and because the viewers can not see this it all looks normal.

very ad state of affairs.
