DAME Thora Hird has died at the age of 91.
She suffered a stroke last weekend and had been staying at Brinsworth House, a retirement home for actors in south-west London.
The news of her death came from her long-standing agent Felix de Wolfe.
He said: "Thora was loved by all. Everyone felt that they knew her through her work, and today, the entertainment industry and Britain has lost one of its true original stars."
She will probably be best remembered for her role in the Last of the Summer Wine.
Very sad news, the last I'd heard was that she was improving. A sad loss to many people.

What a shame she was a grand old girl.
Sad news, she always seemed like a really nice lady.

I absolutely adored Thora Hird. She was just the loveliest person and I was SO sad to hear about her death. I know she was in a lot of pain from arthritis in her late years but she always soldiered on, bless her heart.
I still think the best thing she ever did was a TV play called "Lost For Words", in 1999. I have a feeling they will show this again as a tribute to her. She was such a fine actress and I do recommend it to everyone if you haven't seen it already.

This is very sad indeed, BUT there is a time for all of us, after which the struggle involved and quality of life left makes it not worth it.
This is the time to go naturally and peacefully, with dignity, and I hope this was the case for Thora.
Miriam, was 'Lost for Words' the play with Pete Postlethwaite where he was looking back at her house, with the sellotape up the stairs? If it was, I couldn't agree more.
The most wonderful piece of television drama I have ever seen. So moving, and so affectionate. It brought back everything I felt about my lovely mum too, who I still miss so much.
I hope they do show it, although anything she did in her later years (not particularly last of the Summer Wine though) was eminently watchable.
Her greatest gift was her normality, and her ability to communicate on that level. She epitomised a time I grew up in and understood.

I loved her too. A much underated actress. I too remember that play with pete Postlethwaite as being brilliant, also that fantastic Alan Bennett monologue she did a few years back.
As ROB says she had a good innings, a fulfilled life and was much loved. That's all any of us can hope for.

It was, ROB. Pete was brilliant as her son, too. I cried absolute buckets. Please watch it everyone, if it is shown again.

She was an absolutely brilliant lady. Loved those Alan Bennett monologues she did - so true to life. Reminded me of my Nan in lots of ways. She will be greatly missed.

God Bless Thora, you entertained us so much while you were here.
An incredible lady with a talent for making people laugh and cry.
Her daughter ( the beautiful Janette Scott ) will miss her so much, as i'm sure we all will.
We can only hope that the faith she had becomes a reality now.
A rose for a grand old lady.
God Bless.
