Ripper museum an insult to East end Women

'Britain’s newest museum was billed as a project to “recognise and celebrate the women of the East End”, showcasing 150 years of the social history of London’s women.

But when it tried to open this week local residents were aghast to see that what it actually showcased was the grisly work of Jack the Ripper – a revelation that has led to protests and the designers of the museum in London’s Cable Street labelling it as “salacious, mysogynist rubbish”.

The museum was due to open its doors to the public on Tuesday, but by Friday morning it remained closed, following a week of protests.'

It's not so much that, as that there is a lot more to the working class of Victorian English women than merely as victims to the Ripper.

Not saying that the East End was particularly glorious, but maybe the baby farmers should also be reflected, as should the fingersmiths and maybe even the prostitutes.

They weren't all just fodder for Gentleman Jack, but there certainly was a successful underclass operating.

Simple, if you are not interested in anything to do with the ripper then don't visit a museum under the banner of Jack the Ripper museum:shrug:

Ripper stuff aside...Is'nt a museum just dedicated to women abit sexist?With all the gender equality stuff these days i would've thought a museum dedicated to the 'People of the East end' would be far more acceptable.Then they could have had a section devoted to Jack the Ripper in there anyway as it is part of the history of the place.

I don't think that's the point they may have secured permission and/or funding due to the social/cultural aspect relating to Women of the area and that was not part of the museum.

'Mr Palmer-Edgecumbe has said that the original plan was to “do a museum about [the] social history of women”.

“But as the project developed we decided a more interesting angle was from the perspective of the victims of Jack the Ripper,” he told the Evening Standard. “It is absolutely not celebrating the crime of Jack the Ripper.”

An 'interesting angle'... murderers are an interesting angle now, keep your eyes peeled for a Brady and Hindly museum or a Donald Neilson museum then.
It's disgusting that they would gloss over all the reformists, philanthropists, social and political activists and ignore their role in the war effort for this :(
