Received an email today saying someone had tried to log into my account and incorrectly entered the password 5 times. Definitely wasn't me as I last was on here July 26.

It's because spambots are trying to hack into accounts. The reason for it is that a few months ago a list of something like 5 million username - password combination got released on the Internet, as the result of a hack on another site.

And these spambots are going round loads of different sites trying to login with these login details, with the aim of sending spam by private message I guess.

I've had to explain this quite a few times recently to people. It's a list of 5 million by the way, not 500 million as I've previously said. I think it was older login information on a few GMail accounts, incidentally.

As a general security tip use decent passwords on sensitive accounts, and don't use the same password you use on these accounts that you use on other things.

I'll try and take more action to stop these attempted logins.

Well it might help if you looked in now and again as the same things happened to most posters on here
