I remember them, my dad used to give me a £ note to buy some ciggies for him at the shop, in the days when a kid could buy ciggies from the shop:laugh:

...LOL, yeah Ruby..I would go to the shop to get a packet of tobacco and some mints for my granddad..(because he thought that my mum wouldn't know he'd been smoking his pipe if he had a mint afterwards..)....I was really young, not even a teenager and they always sold it to me because they knew it was for my granddad...when secretly I could be smoking my pipe on the way home...actually I probably was, so that fooled them and it helped granddad to give up smoking as well....
..he also thought that she wouldn't know he was drinking whiskey if he put it in a coffee/tea cup...
I remember pound notes but this one

They only stopped being legal tender here last year didn't they?

..I so hated being given a Scottish note because many places would never accept them even though they were legal tender and you often had to go to the bank and change them to be able to spend them...

Yeah I think it was mostly 1 pound and ten pound notes that the shopkeepers in England wouldn't take

When money was tight (as it was always!) My mum and dad would send me to the shop with pennies and buy just 2 fags (as the shopkeeper would sell singles), that was the late 70's early 80's for you!
If the shopkeeper was suspicious they'd ask for a note from your parents which usually read: "I would like 10 JPS please, please give them to my daughter." then he'd sign his name at the bottom:laugh:
Later on my sisters became really good at forging a letters from my parents so they could smoke, it was something that never interested me, i never smoked (but i did the drinking thing on the local park bandstand......Jaguar Lager and Strongbow/White Lightning cider:hehe:

I used to collect fag packets as I was fascinated by them and in the 70s people threw a lot more rubbish on the ground. If I could find a pristine packet I was made up.

 When I was a kid, 'Ciggies' was one of the most popular playground games.
We kids would collect empty cig packets - the 'sleeve' type which were the majority type then, not 'flip top' like now - and we would remove the inner cig holders and discard them and flatten the outer sleeves. A solitary sleeve was stood up in a corner of the yard and from a distance we would take it in turns to 'whizz' a flattened cig packet sleeve at it in attempt to knock it down. The first player to do so 'won' all the ciggie packets which were unsuccessful.
It was quite a skilful game, believe it or not, and some kids had hundreds of cig packets which were the envy of other not so skilful players.
You might recognise some of the more popular brands of ciggies from the following joke:
Two members of the Senior Service were walking down the Park Drive, when they came across two Woodbines crying their eyes out.
"What are you two crying for?" they asked, and the Woodbines replied;
"Kensitas".

A pound was a lot of money then...
Thinking about that though what is the point of coppers now? I think that it would save loads of money if banks didn't have to transport them up and down the country. round everything up to the nearest 5p and get rid.
