View Full Version : Kirk's Broken Fingers (Don't All Laugh At Once Lol)

I was ahead of a tight schedule with my renovation work but today broke two fingers in a stupid accident.
I am right handed and they just happen to be on my right hand. :bawling:
However, I will not let this stop me and will carry on.
Pain-killers and grit will get me through the dark days ahead.
I don't really know why I'm telling Tibb about this, apart from the hope that Liv, Ammi, Caitlin, Kaz or one of the other Tibb Hotties might give me some sympathy. :hehe:

Well I'm not a hottie Kirk, but you still have my sympathy:sad: How did you break them?
You are a hottie to me Jenny and I thank you for your sympathy love.
I bought an 8' long commercial stainless steel cupboard with sink for the 'Barbie Shed' and it is really heavy. Whilst unloading it, I had the heaviest end (as usual; Kirk the Donkey ) and put my right hand inside the open cupboard to lift it. The delivery guy, who was inside the van, lifted his end, and WHAM, both heavy stainless steel doors slammed down onto my fingers -- OUCH.
I just had a 'Blond' moment Jenny.
I actually think that I'll be OK to resume work on Monday - well, light work anyway, we'll see.
The base cupboard which I bought is just another example of how it's possible to secure expensive objects at bargain costs by being planning ahead, painstaking searching, and being patient.
I wanted something for the 'Barbie Shed' which provided safe, sealed, hygienic storage for party/barbecue plates, glasses, dishes, containers, etc, and cleaning implements, and also a stainless steel table on which to put cooked dishes of food on straight from the barbecue prior to serving (over the bar/counter I'd built).
I also wanted a small sink which I could plumb in for hand-washing purposes.
Even small used stainless steel tables were circa £150, and small used cupboards (which were hard to find) were £300 to £500. Small sinks with taps and traps were another £50 to £80.00 used on average.
I have searched for months (and prayed ) and finally came across this one which had the two built in cupboards, built in sink with taps and 8' of beautiful stainless steel worktop. The price of this very unit new is over £1,100 yet i paid just £100 for it.
The new barbecue in the pics is a 6 burner and had been reduced by the store to £200 from over £400 because it had two small, almost invisible dents (the size of pinpricks) on the front. I negotiated them down to just £125.
I sincerely hope that by the time I have finished this thread, when some Tibbies see something prohibitively expensive looking in magazines or on TV, they will be inspired to think; "Wait a minute, I could replicate that LOOK without spending a fortune".

Thanks Kizzie. No, I once broke another finger and waited an hour at the hospital only for them to do what I could have done at home; strap it, tell me to rest it, and eat pain-killers
I didn't want to take up their precious time which would be better spent on treating real emergencies, so I have just strapped them up myself, and I am resting them, and eating pain-killers :hehe:

I applaud your hard work and thriftiness Kirk. It is amazing what you can do (and save) when you put your mind to it.
I'm no DIY person, but I do make my own bread, cook from scratch, knit, sew, embroider etc, which in the long run saves a fortune. Mind you I had good training. In the 1950's my mum was a widow with seven kids still at home and she didn't get a scrap of help. So it was a case of having to 'make do and mend' as the saying goes.
Luckily I'm married to a man with the same mind-set and so nothing goes to waste in our house.
Please show us pictures when everything is finished. From what I've seen already, it's going to be a wonderful place to live.

Thank you Hog my mate. I will reply as I used to:
For Hog:
'A trouble shared is a trouble halved'
Isn't that what they say?
So I was hoping it was the same with pain
And sharing would make it go away.
So I posted my accident on the forum
For all of TIBB to see
But despite the kind words spoken
ALL the pain is just with ME.
But am I not super strong and tough?
A mythical macho man am I.
So when it hurts, in public I smile and joke,
And wait while I'm alone to CRY.
Take care Hog.

..how are they feeling now Kirk..?..
They are still painful at times - especially when I catch them  - and look horrific, but I genuinely have always had very strange recuperative abilities Ammi, and yesterday I plastered 2 walls with little problem.
I believe that it is the bones in the ends of the two fingers which are damaged (my fingernails are black and will probably 'drop off') so I am lucky that it was not mid finger, which would have incapacitated me for much longer.
Here are some pics of some of the plasterwork I am currently doing, because, again, it is unusual and you may find it interesting.
I decided to remove the internal double doors and frame from kitchen into conservatory in favour of just an opening, so that the garden features were visible from the dining table - once the conservatory is totally renovated.
I wanted to reduce the size of the opening but this meant bricking up the difference in matching brick which was too costly and time consuming, or studding up the difference in timber and plasterboard, which was far cheaper and quicker, but which would leave an ugly plastered panel between brickwork and new door lining.
I overcame the problem by replicating the brickwork on the plasterboarded studding and I think that by the time the entire conservatory walls are painted in an ivory masonry paint the 'faux' brickwork will be barely - if at all - noticeable.
I'm pleased to say that I managed this despite being handicapped by my dodgy fingers.
Thanks Ammi.

For Ammi, Vannessa, Calderon, Cherie, Kizzy and Jenny Juniper:
I finished plastering yesterday (and filled time on TIBB waiting for the coats to dry) and went to the hospital as I promised you all.
Phew!!
I got a bollocking from two different nurses for not going immediately the accident happened, but the good news is that only one finger is actually broken and the other very badly bruised. As I thought, they bound my fingers together (I think the nurse doing the dressing was into S &M and Bondage ) and sent me on my way with an order not to do any more work, an appointment with my GP and a prescription for pain killers.
The bad news is that I will probably lose both fingernails - which cost me a fortune to have manicured (just kidding :hehe:).
