North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered his frontline troops to be on a war footing, after an exchange of fire with the South across their heavily fortified border, state media report.

The KCNA report said Mr Kim declared a "semi-state of war" at an emergency meeting late Thursday.

It threatened action unless Seoul ends its anti-Pyongyang border broadcasts.

The North often uses fierce rhetoric when tensions rise and it has made similar declarations before.

The BBC's South Korea correspondent Steve Evans says that although this ritual of aggression often sees such language escalate to the firing of ammunition, this time the rhetoric is fiercer and artillery shells are now in use.

KCNA reported that Mr Kim had ordered that troops be "fully ready for any military operations at any time" from 17:00 Friday local time (08:30 GMT), at the emergency meeting of the central military commission.

Usually North Korea do a significant amount of grandstanding before their 'attacks' instead of doing them out of the blue.

Jong-Un is getting desperate, there's been more and more rumours of citizens forming small pockets of uprising (vandalising "election" posters ect.), there's also the fact that he keeps killing off his advisors, people who his father trusted over decades, and replacing them with yes men. I wouldn't be surprised if someone eventually offed him, he's like the Joffrey of North Korea. He definately doesn't have the respect or confidence his father and grandfather had.

"definately doesn't have the respect or confidence his father and grandfather had. "

He has his own body guard

he becomes part of the side
that want the lad (also Leader of North Korea) dead.

Seems like he's trying to prove himself as some great leader. The North Koreans can't do much about him though unless the army turned on him.

Everyone's making jokes out of this but seriously I think we should be more considerate to those on both borders who could be killed as a result of these tensions..

If north korea tries any **** south korea will DESTROY themAs long as Kim Jong does'nt start dropping nukes on them.I would'nt put it past him if he was losing. Also NK has a big ass army,It's what they spend most of their money on.I think the US would get involved anyway as they have a pact with SK.

Kim Jong-un is terrifying, way past the craziness of Kim Jong-il.

As previous commentators have said, NK would not stand a chance in hell against SK / US. I actually hope that Nedusa is right, and that there is a coup d'etat

:(brewing.

I actually fancied SK for holidays this year...screw that now

South Korea would still suffer heavy casualties, but North Korea wouldn't be at war long, since China wouldn't tolerate NK attacking SK.
