View Full Version : An english eisddfodd?

the truth

After visiting the land of song for the national eisteddfod, world famous poet, Benjamin zephenia suggested we adopt an eisteddfod in England, I like the idea

A national poetry music choirs song writing , writng competition for all.....regardless of education , wealth, background or education
this is what they've had in wales for centuries...and the public love it
over250,000 turn up every year. Its the biggest cultural festival in Europe.

There are 3 eisteddfods...since living in mid wales...ive been to a few and I have to admit the Llangollen eisteddfod reduced me to tears....to see nations represented from all over the world in this magnificent setting singing, writing, reading, sharing, dancing , playing , ..even when you get off the wonderful steam train youre greeted with childrens choirs and brass bands....Im telling you there is no where on earth more beautiful than Llangollen

We could have one in England for the adults and 1 for the children and an international one

Surely we in England NEED such an opportunity to be creative....THIS is the key to so called multi culturalism, bonds of culture and friends, to build on our shared values and interests and celebrate our differences too.. as terry waite espoused when praising the eisteddfod

Lets not be too proud to steal a welsh idea, especially as its a great one
yes we have endless fantastic festivals across England, the best in the world...The hay festival on the welsh borders is another I have enjoyed...

But this type of festival brings in all the schools , the kids, the families and is 1 crucial piece missing from our cultural puzzle....where our culure still is often still too elitist imo and not inclusive enough..such a celebration could even bring in the other british languages, gaelic, ole English, cornis, welsh , irish etc etc .in the land which gave the world the greatest writers of the written word, we need to encourage the artists of future generations

I don't think there's enough of a community to have an Eisteddfod like we do here.

Llangollen is a beautiful place. It's a nice little town when there is nothing going on there aswell.

North Wales. We have the Eisteddfod up here quite a lot. Aside from the National Eisteddfod there's the Urdd who do community events, then we had one in school. I think it brings people together. With our population being as small as it is, it's a celebration of our culture and the nation on a whole. Our population isn't even 4 million people compared to the 53 Million who live in England. It just wouldn't work.

Yeah I agree with you Jarrod the eisteddfod works in Wales because we have a small population but it wouldn't work in England because of the big population.

surely there are still communities in England? the Cornish? the devonians? somerset people....maybe these parts of England haven't been given this opportunity. I agree its probably easier in a smaller nation...but England isn't exactly massive, though clearly vastly more populated. that's partly due to the fact wales is 80% uninhabitable mountains and England is far flatter.

...there is lots of local community stuff, truth..poetry/writing etc and children often perform concerts for the elderly in their communities...also there are festivals where children from different countries are involved...

England does need to feel more like a community, I can't speak for the other UK countries but here in England we're all segregating ourselves from each other because we all highly distrust one another due to what the Media spouts year in and year out.

I love the Welsh Eisteddfods and would love someone to organise an English equivalent.

I'd patronise one.

We have loads of festivals etc here up North.
Street festivals, folklore festival, people from all over the world come to dance.
We just don't feel the need to have one name covers all I suppose.

It amazes us locals that people come from so, so far away to our little villages. I live right next to a famous Aqueduct and we have buses and buses everyday of people from all over like Japan, Australia, America, India. It's crazy!

My sister's been on that zip line :) It's a great idea and it would be a fantastic moneyspinner too for local areas, Yorkshire would be an excellent backdrop for the English version.
