State schools creating cannon fodder?...

The number of cadet units in state schools is to increase five-fold by 2020, George Osborne announced in the Summer Budget.
Speaking on Wednesday, the Chancellor pledged £50 million to create cadet forces in 500 state schools. Most would be in “less affluent areas”.

Currently there are about 275 cadet units across the UK. Of these, only a third (fewer than 100) are in state schools.

According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), as of April 1 last year there were about 131,000 cadets in the UK, divided between the Combined Cadet Force (42,950), a scheme run through schools, and the Army Cadet Force (41,000).

The Department for Education confirmed that the MoD had made a request for the extra funding.

A Treasury spokesperson told Schools Week the money would not be diverted from schools but would instead come from fines levied on banks.

Liar...

As pupils go back to school this week, concerns are growing over the future of the government’s programme to provide free nutritious hot meals to four- to seven-year-olds.

'As part of the chancellor’s autumn spending review, in which all areas of public expenditure are in scope for cuts, the Department for Education will be drawing up detailed plans for making savings. Although overall school funding, including pupil premium rates, will be protected on a per-pupil basis, the budget for the universal infant free school meals programme is not ringfenced.'

Never heard of cadet school inside state schools before.
Great if it is voluntary and kids don't have to do it if they don't want.
My dad went away to the airforce cadet school before the last war.

This page gives schools the information they need to consider when introducing a cadet force unit in school.

Any state secondary school may join the cadet expansion programme but we encourage applications in particular from schools and academies with children eligible for free school meals.

Yep drag those poor brats in the military....

Arista in all seriousness, I think it's time to consign the "WW3" nonsense to chat and games. It was funny for a while but now it's just derailing threads constantly .
