Hey guys

I just think it's ludicrous to start claiming that the nastiness directed at Shilpa is racially motivated.

I think there have been a few sneaky comments that could have been misconstrued as mildly racist, but I don't think it was intentional.

I have to say I can see where the three girls are coming from as I find Shilpa highly irritating and she does appear to be very fake (her outrageously exaggerated laugh, seemingly unnatural mannerisms and the whole "feel sorry for me" thing). I think that the girls just genuinely don't like her and I don't think the question of race has ever come into it. I just think Shilpa is genuinely unlikeable and I find it very hard to watch her without getting exasperated.

My opinions are not racially motivated and I would be disgusted if there were any signs of racism in the house, but I think this is just another case of idiotic and easily led members of the British public who need something to complain about, coupled with the media blowing it out of proportion. I think a white British girl with Shilpa's personality and mannerisms would recieve exactly the same treatment and it would be highly naive to think otherwise.

Just my opinions but I think people are being far too sensitive and too willing to play the race card at the drop of a hat. This is clearly nothing to do with racism.

Also, I do think they are ganging up on her a bit unnessicarily and you can feel the tension, but she does just keep doing highly annoying things. For example, flushing a stew with bones in it down the toilet - what the ****** was that about? However, I do think that a few comments such as "Use your teeth Shilpa" and Danielle talking about putting something in Shilpa's curry were out of order and shouldn't have been said. Bearing that in mind, they are not racist. I wouldn't want someone picking at my food or controlling what I eat or what goes on the shopping list, and I would laugh at any woman parading around with shaving foam on her face; black or white.

Shilpa can be annoying, but jeez, you don't go at it the way these three have. They sit there and they bully and they pick her apart. They call her every name under the sun. Shilpa is not fake, she's just herself - that much is obvious. I know plenty of people with annoying laughs and who at times can be slightly controlling but do I actually BULLY them? Absolutely not!

If the viewers didn't like the show they would of switched off by now...like some did when Jade entered. I think everything is being blown out of proportion especially mocking someones accent...it is fun having a laugh at accents we have all done it. The fact that Shilpa also has mocked accents makes people seem very hypocritical. Plus I don't personally think one comment makes someone a racist. People say things in heat of the moment or in anger...if there was any real racist in the house it would be alot clearer and you could tell by the way they would act. As far as I've noticed she has not construed or even heard the racist overtones..... Maybe coming from India proper she doesn't even recognise racists comments.... in her own country she is in the majority and a relatively well placed member of her society.... Donkeylegs seems to be getting quite heated but I would like to pick up on the fact that I listed two occasions where Shilpa mocked accents (Jo and Jade's), which, being more than once surely makes that several times as well.

I don't think that there is racism in the house. I do think they are bullying Shilpa though. Okay, so they don't like her - fair enough, you can't like everyone. But do they have to go on and on and on and on about it. Danielle seems unable to talk about anything else! Everytime you see them they are bitching about her. Danielle is starting to go a bit too far and you just know that when she sits down in a room with one of the other girls she's gonna start bitchin. I think what we're witnesssing here may or may not be racism I don't want to comment on that. I do, however, believe that it is acute and extreme ignorance of Shilpa's culture. After all, Shilpa may be annoying but she's not been confrontational or argumentative towards them. So why are they acting the way they are.

I thinks its tragic that when these three girls are confronted by someone of a different culture; instead of attempting to understand her, resort to cheap, ignorant and frankly xenophobic actions. As someone pointed out on another thread, Dirk and Jermaine have no idea of Shilpa's culture either but they are behaving in a much more dignified way.

I feared that Shilpa may walk but judging by her remarks in the diary room at the end of last night show, she seems determined to tough it out. At the end of the day she has to walk out of there with her head held high because those three girls are going to be so embarrased when they leave the house and are constantly quizzed on the subject of race.

Channel four claim he used the c word and not the P word as in the braodcat the words were beeped out. Either way, it's an unacceptable for him to call her.

There is also the constant mocking of her accent. I work with two Indian men who have strong accents. I have never at any point felt the need to imitate them. But that's just me. Also, the deconstruction of Indian culture after Chickengate was, for me, quite difficult to watch. You may disagree but I ask when some body questions a whole cultures way of life that is surely ignorant and prejudicial. I, at times, find Shilpa annoying but I don't think that's a good enough reason for the treatment that she's getting. She made a mistake with the chicken but the way Team Ignorant went on and on and on and on about it was completely unacceptable. Like they're all masterchefs.

The slightest thing that Shilpa does is blown into a huge deal. Example - the seemingly endless berating that she got from Jade because she was the first put her hand up to nominate carole for eviction. I felt so sorry for her. It was something that they had to do so why was Jade having such a go at her about it. It's was ridiculous.

You say that a white English girl would get the same treatment. I disagree. I think the fact that she's a big star - which incidentally Jade and Jo are now questioning - and the fact the she's from another culture have made her an easy target and have given Team Ignorant much more ammunition that any British white girl could have given them. The fact that they are questioning Indian culture backs up my argument.

You talk of playing the race card. I disagree again. Shilpa herself has never mentioned race but, as I stated earlier, the undeniable ignorance that we're witnessing could easily manifest itself into racism.

I think there are too many people who when they hear the word racism immediately assume that people of colour must be overreacting. I am British and of west indian ancestry. I'm not overreacting but I can see an uglyness inside all the members of team ignorant that could easily escalate into something much worse.

Jack allegedly called Shilpa a p***, however I do not think Ch4 would have shown it if he really did. They have nothing to gain from showing it, and if he did say it they could have easily changed the camera angle so you were not able to lip read and could only hear the beep.

The mocking of her accent is not racist. If I wanted to I could say Shilpa is racist because she mocked the way Jade and Jo said whale, she burst out laughing in front of a group of people belittling and humiliating them. At one point whilst discussing the way Jade spoke she said to Jade say a sentence, making Jade feel very uncomfortable and humiliated.

They did not deconstruct the Indian culture, that was a slight exageration. One of the comments was when they were discussing the chicken , they said it was not cooked properly, they were discussing feeling sick after a meal Shilpa made, Jo then said that everyone is thin in India because they have been eating Shilpa's food.. a very nasty comment to make but it is not prejudice towards Indian people just a reflection on Shilpa's cooking.
The other comment made was when they were discussing Shilpa putting her fingers in other people's food (fair enough reason to 'bitch' about), Danielle then said do they eat with their fingers in India, or is that in China.. Now, that is ignorance, she obviously hasn't got a clue about these countries and probably many other countries, but that does not make her racist. Neither was the comment directed at Shilpa. But on the other hand, certain rices in India are to be eaten with your hands so who is the ignorant one?(do not call me racist, google it if you dont believe me lol)

Of course the smallest thing is a huge deal, ofcourse the bitching is constant, they are in the Big Brother house, there is no way of escaping from the thing/person that is annoying you. There is nothing to do in the house, so ofcourse the bitching is going to come up alot.

yes it's undeniable there have been some nasty comments and a feeling of "ganging" up but I wouldn't say this is reason enough to say it was due to race.

Yes there's gonna be tension but the level of it is completely unacceptable and it's aimed at one person who happens to be an attractive, elegant, hugely succesful and of a different culture. The fact that she's of a different culture definitely makes her an easy target. She, up to a certain extent, doesn't help herself due to her wanting to control her surroundings, but the mocking of the accent has to stop. I think when Shilpa mimiced Jade accent it was in a different context. It was due to her not understanding her. Shilpa then laughing can be taken a number of ways. Jade and Danielle have acted in an extremely ignorant way and deserve all the stick they're gonna get for it. We expect this from Jade but I'm extremely disappointed by Danielle. This whole alleged racism thing has been blown way out of proportion and some people are going OTT.. Believe me, if everyone were just saying it was bullying (and I don't mean just bullying as if bullying is fine) I would barely be defending any of them, it's just that I don't agree with the racism issue.

I'm not saying anyone should forgive her for her comments, but I don't think it is fair to call her racist when her comments stem from not understanding, and not having knowledge of another culture/country as I don't think she intends them to be malicious/hurtful/offensive. If they were intended in this way, then I would agree she was racist.

Hey guys I started the thread cos I wanted 2 see what other ppl's opinions were on this. I am glad that a lot of people agree that most of the comments have been blown way out of proportion and should not be taken as racist.

However, some other people, e.g. GRIT have made some very rational and sensible points and I am starting to see things from a slightly different point of view. By this I mean that I hadn't really thought about how innappropriate their behaviour actually is (in terms of the nastiness, not the racism). They are adults after all and, as GRIT said, are making absolutely no effort to accept Shilpa and they do make a huge deal whenever she makes a mistake. If I were Shilpa I think that I would definitely sense the bad vibe as well; they are not exactly subtle about the way they feel. I guess I feel a bit more empathetic towards her than I did yesterday. Anyways, the girls do definitiely need to grow up a wee bit and be much more tolerant of and kind to Shilpa; I think there is consensus on that.

As for Jack calling her a P*ki, I hadn't heard this until checking this thread a few minutes ago, but if it is indeed true then it is absolutely unforgiveable and I think he deserves everything he will get for making such an obsene (and perhaps less importantly, geographically incorrect) comment. My opinion of Jack had declined steadily over the past few days (from very low to start with) and is now at an irretrievable sub-zero level; In short, Jack's a twat!! My opinion on the three girls has lowered as well and I can't wait to see them get pulled apart by Davina when they eventually get evicted, being as they are completely oblivious to the furor that is going on outside the house. God dammit though, I still like the buubly side of Dani's personality.
