The school's in the right. Plenty of people have quit smoking without the use of E-Cigs so that's not an excuse.

Really? You'd think you'd have enough sense by then to not start smoking, my excuse is that I was young and stupid

there are plenty of nicotine replacement therapies available sanctioned by Doctors and available via prescription if the child did indeed have a problem. I call bollocks on the whole story and see it as an advertising stunt too.

I would've been well pissed if the teachers had confiscated my joint at school:laugh:
We used to roll up in class and smoke weed at break time.lol.
If e-cigs are the worst thing kids are doing these days then things are definately improving.
I think the school should've given the devise to the parent to decide what to do with it.
The school has no right to keep something they did'nt pay for.

Of course the school was in the right. And there are 14-year olds these days doing much worse, too!

A bulldog comoy with some lovely 1-Q in it and he would have been quite happy

Yeah, I was joking. I went to school a long time ago and the cane was normal for misbehaving - pretty bad incidents though admittedly. For persistent offenders, the old headmaster personally meted out punishment with a huge size 12 tennis shoe which he dubbed 'Big Bertha' after a World War 2 French Field Gun, I believe.

I was a little angel until Grammar school, where I got plenty of cane and Big Bertha.

My friend and I once 'twagged off' school with our girlfriends who were in our class and spent a beautiful Summer's day on 'Lover's Hill' a local beauty spot. The next day all four of us were summoned to the headmaster's office and 'sentenced to 6 strokes of the cane for us boys and 3 for each girl - I kid you not. After a bit of quick thinking, I said: "Please Sir, I would like for us boys to receive the girl's punishment in addition to our own because it was our fault that they are here - We talked them into playing truant against their wishes".

It worked a treat on the 'Stiff upper lip, Old Fashioned' head, and he actually commended me for my chivalry, dismissed the girls without punishment and reduced our sentence to just 3 strokes each. It still hurt like hell though.

Schools should do this.
Ban mobile phones and other devices.
Ban smoking. Ban foul language.
Teach kids the meaning of the word respect and instill the notion that when in school your life is in the hands of the school with no parental interference at all and tell them that threatening to call child line in class to whinge about teachers will only get back to those said teachers and your child will get detention for a year for trying to play the system.
Also bring back the cane.

I agree that we cannot delegate responsibility for children's care to schools for 8 hours per day, without also sanctioning authority to them. For that 8 hours or so teachers are 'Parents By Proxy.
