I don't agree with violent protest but I do see their point. The working class have been, and are still being, priced out of London. Country people moan that their children can't afford to buy a house in their village because of house prices... try being a first time buyer in London; in part of east London a Victoria two-up, two-down will cost you about half a million. People's whole identity, heritage, culture has been uprooted and discarded in the last few decades so I can see why people are angry.

Oh well, that's okay then. If only those people priced out of their homes knew they were making way for the biggest selection of cereals sold by a couple of precious hipster clones, that would have made it so much easier to accept.

Not sure how this small business is at fault here though, why are they seen as an acceptable target and not council offices or associated organisations?

I agree, London is way too expensive.

To get a family house (2 reception rooms, 3 double bedrooms, a workable size kitchen and a decent garden) in a nice area you have to have minimal 650k.

In Winchmore Hill were I live all the typical semi detached houses are in the region of 700-800k.

Ridiculous, will the next generation ever be able to afford a house?

I guess the best option is to try and save and live at home and help parents pay the bills etc.

On a nicer note I really want to go here, it's only 20 mins away.

..I agree with Liv in that I see their point..but not how they've made or expressed it..Shoreditch I think was very much a 'working class' area and over several years has had so much gentrification ...ok, sell their selection of best in the world cereals for £3.20 a bowl if they want to..which obviously is more than some families spend on a week's supply...but to balance that out..and the same with other 'trendy' businesses in the area/not just them...also do something substantial for the homeless and low income local residents as well....

£3.20 for a bowl of cereal? :worry: I do hope they go out of business with extortionate prices like that.

I agree that gentrification is a massive problem in London but rioting like that does nothing for the cause.

I don't really understand why people are focusing on the £3.20 a bowl aspect. Go into any little cafe and a sandwich and cup of coffee will cost you at least £7 when you could make the same at home for pennies. We went out for dinner two nights ago and it cost £70 - I could have made the same food at home for less than £10...

Not that I personally would pay that for a bowl of cereal but I really don't think the inflated cost of eating out is the point, that's pretty standard.

Property prices in London are, obviously, a huge problem but...... That's the effect of a free market capitalist economy, and people seem to be all for it in other circumstances. Not here for Tories suddenly getting all socialist - but only when it comes specifically to London house prices :joker:.

Quite a few of the gentrified areas are Labour boroughs: Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney... The gentrification has been going on for a while now, and positively prospered through a Labour government.

It's down to demand and if it's there they will stay in business, , no different to people spending 4 quid on a fancy coffee every morning on the way to work, Starbucks seem to have done okay out of people paying over the odds for a coffee. Maybe they should sit on their arse and claim bennies that way no one would abuse them...oh wait..

Brick Lane is the one place in the east end where you can still buy a Jewish stye bagel with a generous choice of filling for around £1, even at 4am in the morning.

£3.20 is ok as there selling rare cereals which cost a lot to buy and ship in.

Maybe closer to £2 would be more suitable.

Yes, New Labour was also full of Tories... :hehe:

My point is that people who are GENERALLY all for "free range" thatcherite capitalism (i.e. letting the market / labour force / prices etc. dictate themselves by supply and demand) are now suddenly against the "gentrification" of London, which is just a fancy way of saying that they are against the idea of "normal people" being priced out of London property ownership. Presumably they then want either some control brought over pricing on those properties in those areas, or they would have "normal people" subsidised in living there. Very clear socialism.

All I'm saying is that people can't be all "Tory Tory Tory yay! Strivers yay! Skivers boo! Austerity boner!" on 99% of issues and then complain when exactly the same elitism affects certain other things . As a famous 16th century poet said; "If you tolerate this, then your children will be next"...

The reason why it cost £3.20 for a bowl of ceral is cuz many of their cereals are imported. They are a business so they need to make money so £3.20 is a price by which they are making money. I think far too many people focuis on the price like its the biggest issue. Go to any store that stocks rare or imported items and you will find youself paying muich more than usual.

I also dont see why this shop is a target. Are all small business in this area treated like this?

Exactly, stores with imported snacks from the US have some crazy prices - cans of soft drinks that you can't get in the UK for £2.50 - £3 a can, etc... it's pretty standard.

When I was in Portugal last year, the convenience store had cans of Irn Bru for 3 euros each. And they were in the Alcohol section :nono: :hehe:

I'm assuming they also sell coffee and stuff? If so I'd probably go! It's a bit of a novelty I guess. Sometimes I don't fancy much for breakfast but I always (...always...) need more coffee, and a bowl of Lucky Charms might go down a treat.

True, if you have your own grinder and coffee machine you can actually buy Starbucks beans, at Starbucks, that will make 50+ large coffees and the bag costs the same as two coffees from Starbucks... Makes it seem a bit crazy. (Also my coffee is loads better than their extra special "baristas" make. Naturally.) But I suppose you're paying for convenience, that's sorry of the point, and again, isn't that the crux of capitalism? If people weren't willing to pay £3 for a bowl of cereal then they wouldn't be in business... But they are .

Hundreds of protesters attacked a cereal cafe in east London on Saturday night, daubing the word “scum” on the shop window and setting fire to an effigy of a police officer.

Riot police were called in to defend the Cereal Killer Cafe in Shoreditch after it was targeted by a large crowd of anti-gentrification activists carrying pigs’ heads and torches.

The owners of the cafe, which has been seen by some as a symbol of inequality in east London, said on Sunday that the attack left customers including children “terrified for their lives”.
