A group of tourists were left screaming in terror after a glass pane on a new 3,540ft high transparent walkway in China cracked.

One tourist said she could feel the the moment the glass shattered underneath her feet.

The 853ft-long U-shaped walkway is attached to a cliff face on the Yuntai Mountain, Henan Province, and only opened to the public on 20 September

According to the Daily Mail, officials confirmed the incident and closed the tourist attraction for repair works.

According to The Sun, one female Chinese tourist, 20, who did not want to be named, said: "The glass-bottomed walkway on Yuntai Mountain just cracked.

"When I was about to reach the end, I heard a sudden bang and felt a shake under my feet.

"I looked down and saw the glass floor beneath me shattered. I have no idea why it happened, at that moment everybody was screaming.

"I pushed the people in front of me to leave. I was terrified."

Social media users started alleging that inferior construction material had been used to build the skywalk.

According to thee South China Morning Post, officials said the cracks were caused by tourists who had dropped a thermos flask on the glass.

A spokesman added that only one out of three layers cracked and the tourists had not been in danger

I would walk on these types of pavements Ammi, but not that high up I'm afraid, and I have worked up ladders and scaffolding most of my life. I do not trust glass at that height.

 Yeah - I mean, according to the article, the glass pavement broke because someone dropped A THERMOS FLASK on it. God knows what would have happened if some idiot smacked it with a hammer or suchlike???

This one's on our bucket list for next year when we go climbing in China. Whilst the wooden planks don't look all that safe, you do wear a climbing harness and you are attached to the rock by safety wire which is very well maintained. Its basically a via ferrata.
