In a very bizarre revelation, Brian Blessed has claimed he once delivered a baby in the middle of London’s Richmond Park. Even more strange is that he chewed through the umbilical cord and licked the newborn’s face.

The brilliantly bearded and loud talking man said the bizarre incident took place in the south-west London park in 1963 while he was starring in the TV police drama Z-Cars.

Blessed said he was running through the park when he noticed a lady sat near a tree.

"I rushed across to her and she was having the baby and had her legs open. She knew me in Z-Cars [and] she said 'please Mr Blessed, I'm having a baby, I'm having a baby'. I said 'breathe deeply' and gradually I got the baby out so the head... I delivered it in Richmond Park and the afterbirth came out, and the clots, I got rid of the clots. Then I got the afterbirth out, then I bit it loose then I tied it into a knot, and then I just called for help and eventually an ambulance came.",
the actor told Radio 4.

When the ambulance did come, Blessed was certainly a site for sore eyes.
"I was covered in blood, my shirt was covered in blood, I was wrapping her, wiping her, [saying] 'it's alright darling'. And I was licking the baby's face. "
Due to Blessed’s working class background he said he knew how to deliver the baby himself.

"I had been brought up with babies."

Ive always had a sweet spot for Brian Blessed ever since he played the role of Fancy Smith in Z Cars, but after reading this I like him even more. It doesn't hurt that he's a Yorkshireman too. :)
