LIVE ACTION CRUELLA DE VIL MOVIE COMING FROM FIFTY SHADES OF GREY SCREENWRITER
Disney's live-action 101 Dalmations adaptation, titled Cruella, has reportedly secured a screenwriter known for a different kind of cruelty.
Hollywood Reporter (via EW) reports that screenwriter Kelly Marcel has been brought on to write the film. Marcel has worked for Disney before, as her first script was for Saving Mr. Banks, but more recently she adapted the book Fifty Shades of Grey.
The film aims to continue Disney's recent spate of success with live-action adaptations of classic cartoons. It created hits with Maleficent and Cinderella, which likely led to the studio's decision to fast-track Cruella. As the title implies, it will focus more on the fur-obsessed villain, Cruella de Vil. Maleficent made the title character more sympathetic, so we'll have to see if Disney similarly ret-cons Cruella to soften her image. Cruella de Vil was previously brought to life by Glenn Close in Disney's live action 101 Dalmatians film and its sequel, 102 Dalmatians.
(Of course, it's probably difficult to put a bright spin on mass puppy murder.)
Disney has a large slate of live-action adaptations of its classic animated films in the works, including The Jungle Book (see the new trailer above), Beauty and the Beast, and a prequel to Aladdin.
