Lights won't go out though.
Like, I get that nuclear power can't just be banned overnight, but it needs to be phased out over time and gradually replaced with clean alternatives like solar and wind.

This isn't for us, it's for them to sell... They're just keeping it here as it's safer.

The clean alternatives still means that they can do the same amount of damage but just got their source from a cleaner power.

Considering we're an island too you would think that we have an advantage that should be used.. not to mention the jobs that it could also create. We could guarantee the steelworkers' a job in a re-nationalised energy sector that can work on making us 100% renewable via the waves

He's not a President, he's the dictator of the communist party. Calling him a president is like calling North Korea the Democratic Republic of North Korea. total misnomer. Same for Putin.

Again, we get this stuff. Like the USA is some beacon of democracy ... not
Doesn't it strike as being a little unusual and a teeny weeny bit undemocratic that 3 loads of the bush family and a couple of Clintons could be in the whitehouse when the population of the USA is > 300 million

well the USA is the world's oldest and most successful democracy.
and no it doesn't strike me as weird that we have political dynasties in America. just like it doesn't surprise me when a Baker's son becomes a baker. And coming from a country with a MONARCHY it's certainly no where near as ridiculous.

Yes, any idiot son of an oil billionaire can become president no matter how ill-equipped he is for the job.
The monarchy doesn't rule the country... you know that, Alex.

The USA is not a democracy, at least with China, Russia etc, there is no pretence at it. Everyone knows what they are getting. For the record, when Putin was elected, he was universally popular with the people, they were in full support of him, it doesn't get much more democratic in those terms

i'm sorry, did you just say there is no pretense that Russia and China are democracies? because i'm pretty sure both claim to represent their people and that they adhere to democratic principles. so how do you figure that there are no pretenses?

Then why are you still paying taxes to them? and why does the monarch still have a ceremony to anoint the new Prime Minister, and why do they still occupy properties owned and maintained by the tax payers? And why did the Guardian expose letters from prince charles trying to sway parliamentarians votes.
The royals OBVIOUSLY have a HUGE influence on the government, and still benefit HUGELY from the tax paying "subjects".

Having lived in Russia for several years, I think I can judge it pretty well, as can the people that live there.
Democracy is not an absolute, it is something that reflects the society that implements their version of it. That is why it is ludicrous to hold the USA up as some beacon, because its not. It pretends to be more than it is. Russia and China don't pretend.

They have no influence on the government. And actually, the royal family bring in much more money than they cost. I'm not talking about tourism, although that does count, I'm talking about the diplomatic meeting and greeting they do, bringing trade and business, and they host industrialists and politicians from all over the world. They all work incredibly hard for a number of charities, and are patrons of one or more. They are employers, each of those palaces and homes have staff. And the Queen has paid tax for a number of years now. As a tax payer, they cost me just over 50p a year, that's about 80 cents. I'd say they were value for money.
