View Full Version : Christmas Shopping...
When do get your start getting Christmas shopping in? I don't mean food shopping obviously but gifts for others...
I'm about half way done although it's all the bigger stuff I still need to get, I'm only buying toys and clothes for my younger nieces and nephews this year too and the rest of them are just getting money and either a selection box/gift set so that's less hunting around for toys.
Will.

This is what I hate about buying gifts, I don't like getting people the same things all the time and I think for ages what to get them and then once ive bought it start wondering if it was a **** idea

Can you not do them a little hamper containing a few bits each of what they like?

No it's not bad, it's what you choose to do.

It's brutal isn't it
I'm the same with my OH's dad, I feel as if we always get him a bottle of whiskey, gift set (lynx etc) and either a playstation game or a foo fighters album.

My dad loved his present last year, it's the first time i've thought outside the box and got him something other than a Lynx gift set  (It was an Alien boxset with all the Alien movies, which he loves)

Bottles of wine in, great for emergency presents and Aunt Mary, plus my neighbour friend.
Litre of rum and litre of whiskey in wardrobe for hubby.
All bought on offer over the past few weeks.
Daughter is home this week for half term so she is off shopping tomorrow with her daddy, she will get our surprise present for son, he will pick his own main present nearer the time.
She got the money to buy some clothes last time she was here and we bought her surprise pressie a fortnight ago.
Hubby will get some cash to buy what he likes and that is it..all done and dusted.

Agree with what Smithy said, I have a massive family and that includes a lot of kids, I don't buy for them due to the marketing led chaos I buy because I enjoy doing it, I enjoy both picking out and making gifts for people that I think they will love and find useful, giving them a treat and seeing them enjoy Christmas makes me happy, ours isn't all about the gifts either it's about spending time with each other as a family.
Also I'll spend my hard earnt cash however I want to, and if that includes treating my family and friends to gifts that I choose to purchase then that's what'll happen :idc:

That's fine If you are spending money you have, so many people get into debt buying crap for people that don't need it all wrapped up in shiny paper. I think it's good if you think about what each person will use rather than just buying tut for the sake of it.

I am not having a pop at you Josy, you make good points
I am just hating on the marketing stuff I am seeing now for what is just one day. The more they hype Xmas the more disappointing it becomes.

I agree with you about the marketing and over commercialisation of it tbh and I hate how it has become a competition for certain people to see who can buy their kids the most expensive items and upload the pics to social media etc.
I do enjoy buying for my family and close friends though and I always buy what I think is needed and will be used rather than spending silly money on stupid things, I also make hampers and little gift baskets some years, not filled with expensive things but decent priced stuff that I know they will use and all of it together in the basket both looks lovely and shows how much thought/time I put into it iykwim.
And I do not believe for one bloody minute that you have ever given the mini LT's just a mars bar for crimbo :fist:

That's the thing for me and probably for a lot of adults we try to create that magical feeling we had as kids but it's never going to happen, the closest I have come is seeing my kids being enchanted by Christmas but now they are older it's just meh..
