This is some new EU ruling

the Labour MP Stella Creasy
[Stella Creasy summed up why
tampons are not 'luxury' items
during a discussion on the proposed
amendment to the Finance Bill on Tuesday.
The amendment would renegotiate the
five per cent tax applied to sanitary products.
Her joke-filled rant took aim at other
products that are not taxed,
such as Jaffa Cakes and razors,
while sanitary products are still
considered to be a ‘luxury item’.]

Razors are not zero-rated. They are subject to the full rate of VAT at 20%.

It's the EU that controls that, it's not up to national parliaments.

Tampons are pretty posh though. What's wrong with Aldi own brand sanny pads?
Anything with posh rope or extra comfort or especially wings! Should be taxed....

Tampons are good for packing fragile items in the post
Don't think its an issue of inequality or misogyny really, it's not very logical but then there are numerous examples of inconsistency in the VAT system. For the record soap and toothpaste are subject to the full 20% VAT as well compared to the 5% that's on tampons

I think tampons should be rated the same as Polyfilla and other crack-fillers. :hehe:
