View Full Version : Make some suggestions for the forum
So I've been seeing a few posts lately declaring how awful the forum is 'these days' so lets hear some suggestions that you feel could make the forum better?
No suggestions of unbanning people please, we all know how those threads end.
Negative criticism is fine but can we not blatantly post things about other members/mods and at least attempt to not get the thread closed.
Drew.

Probably not possible, but adding to the "recent user bans" thing, there could be a 1-4 word description of a reason why a member has been banned attached next to the banned member to avoid any questions or threads asking for why someone has been banned.
Ie:
Banned member:

Duration:
2 days
Reason:
Infractions buildup

A mass cull... no but really... longer bans...
Something set up by admin like those old Music/Film/general knowledge quizzes we used to do on another site that would have an award, but done on here, I think something the whole forum can opt into and take at any time would be quite fun and would tie in well with the arcade/defunct musicbox. The ones I remember were just 10 multiple choice questions, every week, and you'd get points that go towards a 'league' total that updates every week obviously. Can't remember the website, but Eoin/Z won the Music ones on here for some months, and it looked fairly simple as a website - whether it could be integrated on here, or just made 'official' (rather than say, another thing run by Shaun/Tom/Ben) and stickied or w/e. Just something fun and I'd find interesting. Plus Niamh is basically already doing it 6 times a day through Buzzfeed anyway so why don't we get in on the action? :pipe:
I do like the idea of 'liking' or 'supporting' posts too. Obviously a 'dislike' one would be carnage.
Force Marc to dye his hair (any colour, but perhaps tie it in with the current TiBB homepage theme)
Bring back Stropz...
..Stropz..?...
..I agree about the like/quote button that it would be good to be optional..they have it on another forum I'm on and it's annoying when you log on and it directs you to threads/pages that you might not want to go back to...
..I think some of the sections are quite big as well, I don't know about dividing them up a bit.../also often 'samey' threads could be merged more maybe...

A couple of serious opinions
When one posts a post and then spots a typo and edits can we please have a 1 minute grace period before the post shows "last edited and reason" as it is always a typo and its not needed.
On the recent ban list I think we should have the reason that they were banned

No to the first one because people have and still do use the edit post function to post an insult then edit it.
There is no need for the reason people are banned to be shown on the forum it was mostly always for a buildup of infractions anyway and plus it's no one else's business why someone is banned and even when the ban list was being used people viewed it as soon as it was updated and still went into the chat threads and started posting about the persons ban.
..I don't think the ban list was a good idea either and obviously also not good for the mod who made the post because that's how they would sometimes be abused as well...but it was often quite fun, watching a 'heated debate' unfold and then seeing it at the top of the page, moments later.....oooops, there it goes...

Change 'Chat & Games' to 'Forum Games & Spam' - put forum games and those chat threads (eg toms diner, the court) there.
Change 'General Chat' to 'General Discussion' - put topic-relating discussions here
I think this would be useful because some times when there is a topic to be talked about, they are spread throughout General Chat and Chat & Games, where one counts towards post count but the other does not.

Completely agree, and adding to that I would suggest members spend some time taking part in other discussions and different areas of the forum even attempting to create their own discussions at times rather than sticking mainly to one thread/section and posting one worded comments and replies.

These would be great, especially the chat room idea! I think it would actually make a huge difference to the site and people using it more and staying longer.
My suggestion is that maybe there could be a filesize limit on gifs and things (especially in the chat threads), in the same way there is a limit for sigs? My connection isn't always the best and some of the file sizes are huge and really slow things down (or stop pages loading completely) and it can be really frustrating. I know I can turn images off which I usually do when it's running slow, but since nearly every other post is a gif (lol :hehe:) it makes viewing the chat really confusing when I do that. If the files were limited then people can still post gifs, and everyone can view them, and we're all happy! :)
(There's plenty of really easy ways to reduce filesizes for people who are worried about not being able to use their favourite britney (or whatever) gifs anymore :) )

We should be lucky we get 120kb cause most vbulletin forums have 40kb only. Regardless it would be great if this was increased atleast a bit.
Having been personally embroiled in quite a few rows which have become stupidly heated in my time :hehe:, and afterwards regretted the personal elements which have ridiculously crept in, could we not find an emoticon which symbolises a desire to make peace and say; "Sorry"? Something like two hands clasped in a handshake, a hand holding out an olive branch, or a dove holding an olive branch will do.
I'm not up on these techno things, so if what I'm suggesting is too difficult, ignore me.
If someone finds a couple of those type of smileys (smiley sized though) I can add them.

Another idea which should be simple to implement, would be to show what gender a member is by showing a 'M' or 'F' somewhere where the avatar or name is.

Wouldn't the "like/dislike" buttons just bring up the same issues as the "karma" feature.
I seem to remember that was a horribly outdated aspect to the forum.

You could + and - a member's karma. I didn't really understand it myself.
Just like a number in your profile at the side of the page, probably just generally showed how popular you are on the forum.
My karma was commonly in the negative numbers. Obviously. :smug:

"I like your post above"
Because if someone posts something particularly good, it might be nice for them to see lots of likes under it :hee:. Sometimes I'll see a post I like but I don't post anything myself if I don't feel I've got anything to contribute, and having a thread filled with lots of "I like your post" posts would just be really annoying for anyone trying to read the thread and scrolling through lots of nonsense.
I'd use that whenever someone has an incorrect opinion (i.e. when people don't agree with me)
I just think a dislike option could increase negativity on the forum which isn't really needed.

The karma feature sounds different to a 'like' option because it wouldn't be assigned to a member, just individual posts. I can't think of any draw backs to a 'like' option, surely it would just be a positive thing for people to see next to their posts?

Just search your username daily, it normally works (although most of mine are posts worshipping Danniella Westbrooks eastenders character)
This idea just came to me, but would it be possible to be able to customise the smilies that appear at the side of your post to choose the ones you use to make it easier? It's probably more trouble than it's worth but just a suggestion

I do think that bans from certain sections would fix some issues we have, I'm pretty sure it's been discussed in the towers but I'm not sure how possible it is to implement.
