This morning we went to Tesco and there was a guy on self scan and my mum had wine and when he came to approve it he called my mum babe, she's in her 40's and he was about 20...she found it funny but I thought it was weird, I work part time in a garden center and I'd NEVER talk like that to somebody much older than me

Idk I think it can be a bit endearing at times, but a lot of the time I find it strange yeah.

Like Liam, sometimes it can be used a term of endearment, but it is kinda cringe.

I understand why you think it could be weird but I call all my friends either chick or hun as a term of endearment and babe isn't much different

I always get called 'bab' it's just a harmless word that they call everyone so i don't think it's weird.

Those are your friends though that's fine but a young guy calling a 40 year old woman babe seemed disrespectful to me

To be honest, if he'd called me babe, I'd have twisted his nipple until he said "uncle".

..if it made your mum smile Amy, then I guess it wasn't weird but a nice thing for her..

YES!
I mentioned something like this in a chat thread a while ago and everyone thought I was mad.
Being called "love" by teenagers stacking shelves in the supermarket I find so patronising. Especially when you're strangers.

But seriously I think that babe is more patronising than weird tbh, and I hate it when anyone overuses the word cute.:fist:

 And what if the cheeky young upstart was also into Sado-Masochism? Then he'd REALLY think you were a babe. :hehe:

 "Howay pet", "Hey oop love", "Wotcha darlin'" - they're all just regional idioms and used without offense aforethought, but for a young man to address a woman twice his age as "Babe" is definitely weird to me.
A bit like a 20 year old girl addressing me as 'Young 'un' - now, 'Love God' and 'Hunk', I'm used to.
