Coldplay are a British rock band formed in 1996 by lead vocalist Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland at University College London (UCL). After they formed under the name Pectoralz, Guy Berryman joined the group as a bassist and they changed their name to Starfish. Will Champion joined as a drummer, backing vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, completing the line-up. Manager Phil Harvey is often considered an unofficial fifth member. The band renamed themselves "Coldplay" in 1998, before recording and releasing three EPs: Safety in 1998, Brothers & Sisters as a single in 1999 and The Blue Room in the same year. The Blue Room was their first release on a major label, after signing to Parlophone.

They achieved worldwide fame with the release of the single "Yellow" in 2000, followed by their debut album released in the same year, Parachutes, which was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The band's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), was released to critical acclaim and won multiple awards, including NME's Album of the Year. Their next release, X&Y, the best-selling album worldwide in 2005, was met with mostly positive reviews upon its release, though some critics felt that it was inferior to its predecessor. The band's fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), was produced by Brian Eno and released again to largely positive reviews, earning several Grammy Award nominations and wins at the 51st Grammy Awards. On 24 October 2011, they released their fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto, which received mixed to positive reviews, topped the charts in over 34 countries, and was the UK's best-selling rock album of 2011. On 16 May 2014, they released their sixth album, titled Ghost Stories, topping the iTunes Store albums charts in over 100 countries. Their latest release, A Head Full of Dreams, was released on December 4. It peaked at number 2 in the UK Album Chart.

The band have won a number of music awards throughout their career, including eight Brit Awards—winning Best British Group three times—five MTV Video Music Awards and seven Grammy Awards from 25 nominations. Coldplay have sold more than 80 million records worldwide. In December 2009, Rolling Stone readers voted the group the fourth-best artist of the 2000s. Coldplay have been an active supporter of various social and political causes, such as Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign and Amnesty International. The group have also performed at various charity projects such as Band Aid 20, Live 8, Sound Relief, Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, The Secret Policeman's Ball, Sport Relief and the UK's Teenage Cancer Trust. They have also headlined major sporting ceremonies, such as the Paralympics 2012 Closing Ceremony and the Pepsi 2016 Superbowl Halftime Show.

So A Head Full of Dreams landed on the chart at #2 this week... But it's not all bad news, as they've had their strongest opening sales week (http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/adeles-25-beats-coldplays-a-head-full-of-dreams-to-number-1-on-the-official-albums-chart__13161/) since 2008's Viva la Vida.

Whilst I'd have liked it to go to #1, there's just no escaping the fact that Adele is outselling everyone atm. But I'm sure that it will eventually get the top spot when the Adele hype dies down a bit.

A Head Full of Dreams is set to be the new UK #1 after last night's Superbowl performance!

It was their only studio album not to top the Official Albums Chart, but it looks like Coldplay's luck is about to change, as A Head Full Of Dreams leads the way in the race to Number 1.

Thwarted by Adele's mega-selling 25 on its original release in December 2015, A Head Full Of Dreams zooms back up the chart, almost 8,000 combined sales ahead of its nearest rival, to take the top spot at this midway stage.

If it holds on, A Head Full Of Dreams will give Coldplay their seventh UK album, topping off an amazing week for the band, which saw them give a spectacular performance at the 50th Super Bowl halftime show, along with Beyoncé and Bruno Mars.

Read more: http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/coldplay-heading-for-a-seventh-number-1-album-after-spectacular-super-bowl-halftime-show__13780/

Sales are also rising in the US iTunes Chart as well:

696548418261532672

Meanwhile, Chris Martin will appear on the front cover of this month's Rolling Stone.

696691960355143680

And the bands performance at the end of the Halftime Show was the most tweeted about moment of the Superbowl.

A Head Full Of Dreams is officially the current Number 1 album in the UK!

A Number 1 is always worth the wait, and Coldplay's patience has been rewarded today as they finally score a seventh chart-topping album with A Head Full Of Dreams.

The news comes days after the band's dazzling performance at the Super Bowl 50's halftime show, where they shared the stage with Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson and Beyoncé.

The album's climb to the summit gives them a straight run of Number 1 studio albums since Parachutes topped the Official Albums Chart in 2000. See Coldplay's Top 20 biggest selling singles in the UK.

A Head Full of Dreams was released back in December 2015, where it was kept off Number 1 by the mighty force of Adele's 25. This week, though, it's Adele's turn to sit in second place as she climbs two spots to Number 2.

Last week's Number 1, David Bowie's hits collection Best Of Bowie, slides to Number 3, while Justin Bieber's Purpose nudges back up one to Number 4 and Bowie's Blackstar falls three places to 5.

Adventure Of A Lifetime has also risen to 11 in the singles chart, and Hymn For The Weekend is a new entry at 23!

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Coldplay are topping the bill for this year's Glastonbury Festival for the fourth time - making them the only act to ever headline the festival four times.

Good morning. Coldplay today became the first headline act to be confirmed for Glastonbury Festival 2016. They will top the Pyramid Stage bill on Sunday, June 26th.

The band will become the first artists to headline Glastonbury on four occasions, following previous Pyramid Stage headline appearances in 2002, 2005 and 2011. Their 2011 set was later voted the Top Glastonbury Moment of the event’s long history by BBC Radio listeners.

The Glastonbury performance will be Coldplay’s only festival show of this year’s A Head Full Of Dreams Tour. The band have already sold more than two million tickets for their run of stadium dates in Europe, the U.S. and Latin America. The entire tour – which includes four nights at London’s Wembley Stadium – is now close to selling out.

Anchorman

http://coldplay.com/glastonbury-headline-slot-announced/

The NME also interviewed Johnny and Will about headlining for the fourth time:

O8n9ykYoPpo

Meanwhile, in a separate article, they interviewed the whole band - with the full interview coming this Friday.

Coldplay are now set to be the only act in Glastonbury’s 46-year history to headline the Pyramid Stage four times. In a new interview due to be published in this Friday's free NME magazine, Chris Martin said, Worthy Farm is "the closest thing to a homecoming gig" the band have got. "I’d play there every day if we were allowed to," he added.

Here, in an excerpt from the interview, Chris and the band discuss what it’s actually like to be onstage at such a humungous gig, and why for years it was always so tough to actually enjoy the moment.

Can you actually see anything from the stage when you’re up there?

Chris Martin: "It really depends. Sometimes we ask to see. You know, ‘Can we turn the lights up, Graham?’ Because Graham’s our [lighting] guy. That’s really all we can see. I think one of the reasons why award shows or TV shows feel a bit different is because you’re much more aware of the audience being there than you are in a regular gig. I think that’s why it takes a while to get used to. People will often say that it’s a weird vibe when you go straight into playing at the BRITs, or whatever."

Do you get more nervous when you’re within spitting distance of the audience?

Chris: "Well, the truth is, for the first few albums if I looked out I’d be worried that I’d see someone who wasn’t into it, so I stopped looking at people."

So you’d just look into the distance?

Chris: "Yeah, I’d just have a vague area with a vague look. And then after our third album, 'X&Y', it wasn’t making me very happy so I thought, you know, 'We’re selling out these places, and I’m not... I’m still kind of depressed'. So for various reasons, over the last six or seven years, I really try and find people. I think it came from watching Jay-Z’s shows where at the end he’d always point people out and say, 'I see you with the sunglasses' or 'I see you in the One Direction t-shirt'. He put the lights up! And I thought, 'That’s cool, to connect.' That was in about 2009. I really do find people and consciously look at them. Just to have a connection."

What makes Glastonbury different to all the other festivals?

Jonny Buckland (guitar): "We just love that place so much. It’s such a musical Mecca. We’ll come back until they beg us not to. The scale, the amount of different stuff happening – not just music, all the other stuff. I think we’ll try and stay [for the whole weekend]."

Chris, you were 25 when you first headlined. Looking back, can you believe you pulled it off so young?

Chris: "Yeah, I can’t believe that. Thank goodness there wasn’t much internet then, ‘cause I’m sure there were some people who weren’t that happy about it! I love it."

There’s a stigma that’s attached to your shows now, in a way - every tour you do has to be amazing and better than the last, because the last few have been so good striking.

Chris: "This one’s gonna be fun. If you like Coldplay it’s gonna be really good. That’s my poster quote! No, my point is that it’s really exciting putting it together and planning it out."

Are you gonna be bringing back the LED lights from the last tour?

Guy Berryman (bass): "That idea stemmed from something we saw Robbie Williams do once, where he got everyone to take a picture at a gig. And when you see the footage of all those cameras going off, it's like, '****, that was really clever'. So I think we invented those wristbands as a way of doing that in a much more controlled manner. And then other people started using them, so now we’re like, 'We’ve gotta step up our game a bit!' This time, I think they’re gonna do 'other' things too."

You’re so big these days. Who do you look to for inspiration for massive shows?

Chris: "Well, Bruce Springsteen has quote which is, 'More than rich, more than famous, I just wanted to be great' [sic]. And that’s really what I think. Bigness, popularity, all that… That comes and goes, you know? What can you do but make sure what you’re doing is something you can really stand behind, or what you’re singing is something you really need?"
