A transvestite,A transgender and a transexual?

I know you're expecting a punch line:laugh: but no i actually don't know the difference between the three.

So a transgender has a mental condition where they want to be the opposite sex.

A transvestite just enjoys dressing up as the opposite sex but does'nt want to actually be the opposite sex and have the operation to change.

So what is a transexual?

Transvestites are people who experiment with dressing up and acting as a different gender to their own but have no desire to redefine themselves permanently (see: drag queens, someone like Pete Burns):

Transgenders are people for whom their biological sex does not align with the gender that they wish to identify as, this is an all-encompassing umbrella term for all in the trans community.

Transsexuals refer to those individuals who fall into the above bracket but wish specifically to have sex reassignment surgery (the 'op' to you and me) to aide their transition, hence the reference to sex in the term. And it's this that is often the centre of misconceptions regarding transgenders, that all of them are transsexuals and wish to have surgery - or even worse, have to have surgery to become a 'real' man/woman. This is simply not the case, and many trans people have no desire to have the operation, and really, why should they? We are not defined by our sex and more specifically our genitalia, but instead by our gender which is what we outwardly portray to other people. Having a 'sex change' is a very small part, often no part at all, of what being transgender is all about.

Transgender is the term most prefer, in fact the usage of transsexual can be offensive to some who have no wish to biologically transitions for the reasons I outlined above.

Hope this clears things up.

In a nutshell, yes. Here's some more reading if you would like it, which also references other important issues like intersex people:

A cross dresser is someone who just likes dressing in the opposite sex's clothing on occasion but doesn't actually want to be the opposite sex.
