Channel 4 has confirmed the commission of an epic new series Eden (w/t) from KEO Films.
Beginning in 2016 the series will follow the experience of more than 20 highly skilled Brits as they face building a new life with the bare minimum needed to survive creating their own shelter, society and rules. For one year this community will hunt, sleep and live together, cut off from the rest of the world.
The series will be filmed from the inside by embedded crew, personal cameras and a fixed rig, the group will be alone as they start their lives in a remote and isolated part of the northern hemisphere.
So, given the opportunity to live a new way of life will the group learn from our mistakes to create a new Eden? Or will they end up in purgatory?
The community will be made up of a diverse group of people, with a range of skills – from fishermen to foragers, builders to botanists, engineers and entertainers who will each have to cast aside everything from their previous lives to begin again.
With no prescribed infrastructure the group will be given the basics needed to kick start their experience relying on the abundant natural resources and whatever they can scavenge . The series will challenge everything about modern living, raising questions about what we want and need from our communities and how this could shape our belief in society as a whole.
Of the commission Liam Humphreys said ‘Eden developed partly as a response to a growing malaise amongst the young with traditional political systems. It offers a simple insight, what would the world look like if we started again? It promises to be a bold idea, not least because of the scale of the concept but also because as programme makers we have absolutely no idea what will happen’.
Of the commission Colleen Flynn from KEO Films said: “Eden (w/t) is a truly unique proposition, taking highly skilled people, giving them basic resources and seeing what they can create given time and opportunity away from the constraints of modern life. We can't wait to work with Liam and Channel 4 on this highly ambitious and game changing series”
The series was commissioned for Channel 4 by Head of Factual Entertainment Liam Humphreys and Factual Entertainment commissioning editor Ian Dunkley. It will be produced by KEO Films with Executive Producer Colleen Flynn. The series will TX in 2016.
Lets hope it doesn't flop like Utopia USA did :fc:
Will be exciting to see what C4 do with it since it's very similar to Big Brother.
I mean they could have been slightly more imaginative with the title (if we ignore that they already had a show called Utopia and all) (which also flopped)

Brits tired of the rat-race are being sought to create their own perfect society from scratch in a Channel 4 series which promises to replicate the impact of Big Brother.
Twenty highly skilled volunteers will build their own utopia in a remote community, where they will live, hunt and sleep together for an entire year, whilst being filmed by fixed rigs cameras.
The new series, called Eden, is seeking a diverse group of people, ranging from fishermen to foragers, builders to engineers and entertainers, ready to cast aside their previous lives and begin again.
Eden will attempt to tap into the rejection of capitalist values reflected in the surge of young supporters which helped Jeremy Corbyn seize the Labour leadership.
Their pioneers will be asked to create their own society and rules in a “remote and isolated part of the northern hemisphere”. A location in Scotland has been mooted.
Unlike Big Brother however, there will be no producers seeking to manipulate behaviour or evictions from the community – unless they are cast out of the garden of Eden by the settlers themselves.
Much of the filming will be done by the participants, who will also be given cameras, as they seek to make the best of their desolate surroundings.
The open-ended nature of the challenge - the programme-makers do not know how much useful footage will be gathered - is what the producers, KEO Films, believes will distinguish Eden from the BBC’s Castaway 2000 series, which was set on an Outer Hebridies island. Liam Humphreys, Channel 4 by Head of Factual Entertainment, said: “Eden developed partly as a response to a growing malaise amongst the young with traditional political systems.
“It offers a simple insight, what would the world look like if we started again? It promises to be a bold idea, not least because of the scale of the concept but also because as programme makers we have no idea what will happen.”
Channel 4 hopes the series escapes the fate of Utopia, a $50m Fox reality series, which placed 15 men and women in an isolated community and asked them to build their own society. Launched last year, it was axed after two months. A Channel 4 spokesman added: “Eden will challenge everything about modern living, raising questions about what we want from our communities and how this could shape our belief in society as a whole.”
The series echoes the original concept of Big Brother, which was inspired by the 1991 Biosphere 2 experiment in the Arizona desert, in which eight men and women lived inside a glass and steel geodesic dome that sought to replicate the Earth’s environment. Eden is set to play a high-profile role in Channel 4’s 2016 schedule. The broadcasters is seeking to convince the Treasury that proposals to privatise the channel would harm its ability to create innovative new series targeted at younger viewers.

So there's no public vote, only the contestants get to vote each other out. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing, probably good considering this is the Great British Public we're talking about...

Not gonna lie I think I auditioned for this and they emailed me saying they were interested and asked me to send a vid but i completely forgot about ha and never made a vid. So they basically wanted to do Utopia and used this old show's vague format from 2003 to avoid copyrights' payment? :smug:
But I'm really excited seeing how is it going to be. Unfortunately Utopia NL doesn't have subtitles so I couldn't really watch it, though the format is interesting (and I'm not into American reality shows so I couldn't bother watching their version).

Apparently there were protests about the filming location
CHANNEL 4 will take over a Lochaber woodland for a year-long reality TV survival show despite local objections.
Producers have won a battle to film Eden, a year-long documentary about 24 skilled people selected to live together in the wilderness, at the Ardnamurchan estate.
The participants - who will be filmed round the clock - will be expected to hunt for food, grow crops and build their own shelter.
The series will follows in the footsteps of the BBC series Castaway 2000 which made a star of presenter Ben Fogle.
However a number of people living nearby the site had submitted strong objections to Highland Council over the plans.
They said the filming could spoil an area of natural beauty, cause pollution and damage to wildlife and have a negative impact on the local economy.
However, at a committee meeting today councillors voted in favour of the application by KEO Films, the production company commissioned by Channel 4 to create the show.
Councillor Andrew Baxter, of the Highland Alliance Party, said: “I am prepared to accept this application due to the transitory nature of it.
“I have a wry smile when the applicant says it is a documentary. Let’s face it, it is a reality TV show.
“But I am sure people across the country will watch it with interest and it will help tourism in the area.”
His colleague councillor Donnie Kerr said: “My only concern is that it is an area of natural beauty and we don’t want to see anything being built there that shouldn’t be there.
“Apart from that I am remarkably relaxed about this. It will provide a good source of nutrition for the local midges.”
The site lies on the sparsely populated Ardnamurchan Estate, northwest of Acharacle, a region famed for its natural beauty and sporting appeal.
Two locations on the 600-acre site, between Cul na Croise beach and a conifer forest further inland, have been identified as potential settlement areas for participants in the show.
Two dozen volunteers will build their own remote community within the estate, where they will hunt for their own food, build their own shelter and live self-sufficiently for 12 months.
As well as the settlements, eight portable cabins for the show’s production team will be built along with a car park built.
Margaret Green, of Dal-Ghorm House, a property which lies adjacent to the forest, said: “It is not a wilderness, but it is really not suitable for people to live there, because it is forestry.
“I am concerned about what will happen to the wildlife, and that there will be pollution.”
Another objector, Pamela Powell, said: “I am very concerned about the environmental impact of this project as birds nest on the beaches and in the dunes and various species of mammals and insects are present which, along with the plant life, make up a small but important ecosystem.
“This project is not in fact taking place in a very remote wilderness as the publicity suggests. It is only a few kms down a good track to Acharacle village and there are houses even closer than that.
“A fence is already going up which, despite what has been claimed, will restrict access between the beaches.
“These beaches are visited regularly by locals and tourists without the scale of environmental damage likely to be caused by a group living and working there for a prolonged period of time.”
A separate decision on whether the film-makers can restrict roaming access to the site is due to be made by Scottish Ministers.
Channel 4 said that Eden sought to set itself apart from Castaway 2000, which was filmed on the Outer Hebridean island of Taransay, by allowing the participants to film themselves.
Liam Humphreys, head of factual entertainment at Channel 4, said: “It promises to be a bold idea, not least because of the scale of the concept but also because as programme makers we have absolutely no idea what will happen.”

Filming apparently began in April (the article was uploaded on the 23rd):
They have been given the bare minimum needed to survive and will have to create their own shelter, society and rules.
And even worse, they will be filmed while they are doing it.
A group of volunteers have begun building a new life for themselves in a remote Highland forest for a new reality TV series.
For one year, this community will hunt, sleep and live together in picturesque Cul na Croise Bay on the Ardnamurchan peninsula.
The Channel 4 series – entitled Eden – is being produced by London-based KEO Films.
And a spokeswoman for Channel 4 yesterday confirmed 23 people, including the film crew, were now living there and filming had started.
She said: “It’s not a game show, it’s an experience and the crew are living in the same conditions for the same length of time so they are part of the community.
“We are not revealing who the people taking part are or how many men and women there are at this stage.
“We will do that when we have a better idea of when the show will air.”
And she was unwilling to even give a rough time scale for when the series would start being shown on TV.
She added that although those taking part were due to be there for a year, anyone was free to leave at any time.
KEO Film’s application to remove the public right of access to part of the Ardnamurchan Estate for the show caused local controversy, with some locals believing it would be good for tourism and others concerned about its effect on a sensitive protected environment.
However, it was approved by Highland Council and the Scottish Ministers.
Neighbour and objector Margaret Green, of Dal-Ghorm House said: “I am concerned about what will happen to the wildlife and that there will be pollution.
“It is not a wilderness, but it is really not suitable for people to live there, because it is forestry.”
But Jill Gosney, who owns Ardshealach Lodge guest house and restaurant in Acharacle, yesterday said she was very pleased they had chosen to film Eden in Ardnamurchan.
She said: “I think it’s good for the area. It’s always a struggle trying to run a business here.
“It’s exciting that they’re making a TV programme here and it can only bring us business.”
Councillor Thomas MacLennan, Fort William and Ardnamurchan, said: “I’m delighted to hear that it’s all up and running and filming is taking place.
“I’m sure it will be good publicity for that part of Lochaber when it appears on the television.”

It's nothing amazing but it's okay, it has its moments (though they are fleeting)
I'm mainly watching because I like finishing things that I've started, but we'll see how it goes once the new 'series' starts

A ****ing mess at this supposedly being shown in 'batches' but it's not been on since August and their year is up next month
I can only assume it's been quietly dropped

Couldn't find a better link unfortunately but
https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/2657923/channel-4-survival-show-eden-sees-episodes-slashed-as-it-haemorrhages-viewers-and-contestants/
Now it turns out that Channel 4 will only show footage from the camp at the end of this year.
...
More contestants are since believed to have quit, and I’ve learned producers are struggling to find enough interesting footage to fill the time.
A source said: “Eden was definitely an experiment and it hasn’t gone well.
“The Scottish Highlands are not glamorous and it’s a big ask to get people to give up a whole year of their lives. There have been exits after Tara and that has been another setback.
“It was originally planned for there to be regular shows but that’s now changed to wait until it has finished in the late spring and then the episodes will be put together once they have gone through the footage.”
What is the point?

The participants have returned home
welp if they've had no idea that it hasn't been shown since August

Some of the footage is going to be a year old, what an absolute mess this show was
