View Full Version : Scared of the Big Bad 'word'

So this country all of a sudden has become scared to death of the word 'racism'

Instead of accepting it as a simple word to describe racial discrimination IN ALL ITS FORMS, people are trying to deny that it even exists as a concept, just to avoid it being debated.

WAKE UP!!!!

Debate is a good thing, and the Big Brother house has provided us with some very SUBTLE, MANAGEABLE racism that we can all discuss without being too hysterical or judgemental, yet still people are desperately trying to keep a lid on things so that the 'nanny state' can stay in control.

The racism in the Big Brother house should be ACCEPTED in order for us to DEBATE it, and denying it exists is only oppressing the people's right to debate. Anyone agree?

Communication and debate should never be stifled

I am only denying that they themselves are racist...

I don't think their treatment towards Shilpa is racially motivated.

The comments they have been made, I can see how can be viewed as racist, but feel they were made out of ignorance.

AND...

I do love a good debate or two.

Yep Hitman, I agree.

I went to several schools in very ethnically-mixed areas, and have seen many kinds and levels of racism.

To say that "Shilpa Popadum" is not racially based is ignorant. To say "I just wish she would ****** off home" is not racist is ignorant beyond belief.

If you want to confront something you gotta give it a name. And the name of much of the behaviour we have all witnessed is racism.

Which is not a bad word, just a word we use to describe certain people and types of behaviour.

Of course care should be taken when using such powerful words, that can cause offence and hurt on a widespread basis, but it should not be denied when present.

Maybe then you should inform them. Complaints to Ofcome didn't fall out the air, people had to make a move and get it noticed. Thats what you'll have to do if you want them to investigate the racism on this forum. But first shot, let the mods/admin know

So if racism is founded on an ignorant attitude towards another race, why is it being used as a defence for these racist 'over-tones'?

Racist 'over-tones' are what come from racists.

You see Sue I disagree a person can be racist no matter what they do for a living or what colour their aunties dog is. Racist remarks are racist remarks no matter whether they are meant as a joke or not.

I think that the biggest issue is cultural ignorance and that is what has let Jade and her cronies down, they just dont see that the words that spill out of their mouths are racist or could be percieved as racist. I dont think that the intent was there but none the less it really isnt appropriate to call Shilpa "popadom" that is ignorance!
