Actually I'm not sure that Captain April was ever mentioned in the official stories.

I think Robert April appeared in The Animated Series, which people kinda dismiss lol. But Pike was the First Captain of the Enterprise to be shown on the show (in the pilot, 'The Cage') :p he is also in Star Trek 2009 and Into Darkness.
