Channel 4 announced today that it would donate its profits from tonight’s Celebrity Big Brother eviction phone vote to charity after the row about alleged racist bullying.
Housemates Jade Goody and Danielle Lloyd both apologised to Bollywood film star Shilpa Shetty last night in a belated attempt at reconciliation.
Complaints from viewers about the race row soared to more than 36,000 yesterday as programme sponsor Carphone Warehouse suspended its affiliation with Big Brother.
Channel 4 has remained defiant about the show, but today the network agreed to Labour MP Keith Vaz’s calls for it to donate its proceeds from tonight’s phone vote to charity.
A Big Brother spokeswoman said the money would be distributed between charities nominated by the contestants at the end of the show.
Mr Vaz, who tabled a motion in the House of Commons about the programme, had urged Channel 4 to donate the profits to a racial awareness campaign.
