View Full Version : A question to people from Essex (although others can get involved if they so wish)

Do you think that TOWIE (The Only Way Is Essex) gives the general public the wrong idea of what most Essex people are like? Or do you feel that most people can see TOWIE for what it is and that Essex people still get treated with the right level of respect from other parts of the country?

I've never been to Essex, but after watching only a couple of the TOWIE shows I have no wish to go there. However I don't believe for a moment that the majority of Essex people are like that. At least I hope not.

I can't really comment on the whole towie/essex thing, but I grew up in Newcastle and I know that Geordie Shore doesn't represent the city or the people in it at all. I've never actually watched it because I refuse to lol, but just from what people say about the show and their opinions of Newcastle/Geordies because of it. So it wouldn't surprise me if Essex people didn't like Towie.

I don't even think the people that watch this rubbish will understand the question so its no point asking it.

I've been to various parts of Essex Jenny, and the people I met there are nothing like these 'TV/Celebrity at all costs' nauseating airheads. More just a slightly more friendly, slightly more 'Northern' version of the typically aloof 'Southerner' really.

No one can blame anyone for mistakenly believing that most people from Essex are 'Fame-Vultures' though, when every second person on all Reality and Talent shows seem to hail from there.

No Jamie - 'Geordie Shore' does not represent the typical 'Geordie' - it's more representative of our mate Adam. (Ssh! Don't tell him. :hehe:)

That's true. You know until you mentioned it I hadn't really thought how many reality show goons are from that area, but there are an extraordinary number of them.:conf::shrug:

Being from Essex myself, I wouldn't think this to be true.

Brentwood is more 'middle-class' than the rest of Essex, so I wouldn't say it represents Essex as a whole. I can also say the show does not represent my area, although quite a few girls have gotten hideous fake tans in my school.

Has it got a 'Red Light' area though Josh? Or is LT mixing up Brentwood with somewhere else he used to visit regularly?

And EVERY school i every area of the UK now has quite a few glowing 'Orange' girls.

Before TOWIE the only time I had heard of Essex was during sociology and the rise of 'Essex man'.

I don't think any of those type shows represent the majority from those parts of the Country. I can only has at a guess that reality show producers seem to look for the extremes, the exhibitionists, fame at all cost types, hoping that viewers are drawn in in a car crash tv sort of way  As an Essex girl myself, I am 'nothing' like those TOWIE idiots, and can't abide them.
