I've just got a couple of questions about chat threads. I'm just wondering why they get closed basically? And if they get closed, when are new ones made? And if anyone can make them and if you need to get permission first? Just the general rules of them I suppose, I couldn't find anything in the FAQ section. (I'm not talking specifically about last nights chat thread that got closed btw, I'm just curious to know the rules in general)

It's all rather confusing tbh

last night the chat thread got closed because of arguing, in that case people are not permitted to start up a new one.

Normally generally speaking they get closed when a mod thinks they're big enough could be anywhere between 3000-5000 posts really. When it's decided to close the thread, those posting in the Chat thread usually decide amongst themselves who will start the new one and it's started pretty much as soon as the old one is closed

The reason they get closed when they get too big is that bigger threads can slow the forum a bit I think

Oh good it's not just me  It would just be nice to know is all, I saw a new chat thread before and thought 'oh yay, that's good' lol, but then I saw it had been closed too. I'm just curious more than anything

Ok that's good to know, thanks Niamh. You know if they're closed because of arguing though, and we can't set up a new one... when do new ones get set up after that, and is it only mods/staff that are able to do it?

Will.

Niamh kindly explained to me some of it on VM today after my chat thread got closed.

I sort of get it but at the same still a little confused.

A new one gets started when the mod who closed the original one decides. In that case they may just open the old one

What exactly is confusing you Will?

The whole when you can open one.

So if a new one can be made, the mods will post in a previous chat thread saying they we can make one?

Ok thanks :)

I think what Niamh's saying is that if they're closed for arguing then it's the mods discretion and we can't intervene, we can only start our own if they're closed due to the length of them.

Niamh.

Yeah that's what confused me,

I thought the cabin was closed because of the length, I didn't realise it was arguing as I only looked at the last 2 pages.

And I thought that if it was closed because of arguing a mod would have wrote at the end of the thread.

But then Josy commented like 4 pages behind.

Jamie89
25-11-2015, 12:29 PM
Actually, just another question sorry Niamh. You know if there is arguing in the chat thread (which hardly ever happens lol :umm2:) could you not just give warnings or infractions to the people arguing instead of closing the chat thread for everyone?

Josy
25-11-2015, 12:30 PM
I closed the chat threads last night because I clearly posted in the thread that if it ended up closed it's not getting reopened, the arguments and reports from there continued so it's closed.

Its the same people that ruin it for everyone constantly.

Yeah,

See I looked at the last page and there wasn't any arguing, I wasn't present on the chat thread when Jason and Adam were arguing.

And I didn't see your comment lol until Niamh said you posted like 4 pages behind

If I had red the previous pages then I wouldn't have made a new chat thread.

I understand, I noticed you'd posted that last night. I was asking more generally really though about the rules because like I say I couldn't find any info on it and was just curious. Would it not be an idea though, if it's just certain people who are ruining it, to give out warnings instead? And then the threads can stay open for everyone else?

Jessica.
25-11-2015, 12:37 PM
I think she already banned/infracted people. I would advise just waiting it out, there might be a new thread and might not, threads about it won't actually help the cause.

No because warnings and infractions are being ignored too much and arguing continues between different members when the others get banned.

We wont spend all of our time dealing with rule breaks and petty arguing between members in there constantly, so until members are able to use those threads without arguments, cliques and thinking they have the right to dictate who is allowed to post in them and who isn't then that specific one will remained closed.

The other one will be reopened at some point.

Just to say again though lol, I didn't make this thread to ask specifically about last night. I just wanted to know the general rules etc because I couldn't find them. I was going to message the mods to ask but thought if I post a thread then other people who might not know what the rules are could also find it useful.

Ok that's fair enough, thanks. I wasn't trying to be awkward or anything. Just trying to get a handle on the way it works is all.

Maybe we should have an argument thread called 'outside', so if tension builds, people can 'take it outside'. Ok, that was a bad joke obvs *groan*

Possibly need to end up doing something like this yeah.

We are already going to be giving out higher infraction points (this was decided the other day by James) due to members not really taking infraction seriously enough and continuing to rule break. Which is a shame really because regardless of what some may think we don't enjoy banning people but if that's the way it has to be to stop certain members disrupting the forum or ruining it for others then so be it.

..it could be a separate rule thing just for the chat threads, so that only one warning is given and then a fixed ban for anyone involved if that doesn't have any effect..and that way, those who are respecting the thread and others in the thread, will still be able to carry on and use it...

That would be a good idea actually if it's possible. Sometimes things get a bit heated and people say things in the moment, which fair enough maybe they shouldn't, but it's just what happens sometimes. It would save the mods banning people and keep the chat open for everyone else so win/win?

Far be it from me to agree with Jay  but he is absolutely right. I am tired of the excuse that the few spoil it for the many on here. The last few times the chat has been shut down, there are no new names added to the ban list, and we have no idea who was interacted or warned for their behaviour. There are 50 some odd people who have posted in the current chat thread, and about 40 of those are regular posters or viewers of it. I really don't see why all those people get punished for a night where two or three are arguing and the rest of us have no control or part of it.

I agree with greater weighted infractions or bans if that is the case. What is the purpose of the infraction system if 40 people receive punishment for the actions of 3-4.

With the chat thread in question its more a case of the many ruining it for a few.

There was a name added to the ban list last night too but no one else needs to know who was warned or infracted for their behaviour that's between the members in question and the admins/mods.

That threads staying closed for the foreseeable future because it's constant in there between a large amount of the regular members, not just one or two.

I have no infractions for posting in there, although I have several accusations against me. I wasn't asking to know who was infracted, but I am asking for the people responsible to get proper punishment, and let the rest of us get on with it. It's actually a fun thread 90% of he time, and it wouldn't be so popular if it wasn't.

I know that, I was replying to your comment saying nothing was added to the ban list. Well it was.

With all due respect Mokka, maybe you find it fun 90% of the time but then you aren't seeing all of the reports, arguments that get deleted when you arent there and so on, like we do.

No, you are right, I am not. And I wouldn't want to do the job of you or the mods for all the tea in China, but that doesn't change the fact that it is the most used thread on here by the most people during off season and it wouldn't be so if people didn't like it. Maybe higher rate of use equates to higher amounts of complaints... but throwing out the baby with the bathwater seems like a poor solution to the problem imo.

I'm just wanted to say sorry for causing you hassle Josy and Niamh with me making a chat thread.

It wasn't even your thread that got closed down. It was The Cabin. The Jungle just got too big so it was closed and that was like 2 weeks ago. Unless you're apologizing for something else then fair enough.

Last night the chat thread was closed because of Jason and Adsm arguing.

I think, I may be wrong.

Eh? :umm2:

I don't deny that me and Adam had an argument (although I'd call it a disagreement tbh) last night on the thread, but I stopped talking to Adam on the thread after I said what I wanted to say and what he said what wanted to say, and I was no longer involved in anything after that as I was just having normal conversation with other members who weren't involved, which at that point a few other members or one member per se (who I won't name) also got involved and said something offensive to Adam which resulted in a ban and presumably a reported post - which was Josy's reason for closing it down. I didn't receive any infractions or warnings. So I don't really get where you're coming from with that comment, but okay.

I've noticed a pattern which usually leads to threads getting closed. It all stems from one comment from one person and I predicted as soon as that comment was made that the night wasn't going to end well.

in order to stop this happening we ought to look at the root of the problem first and go from there.

I've noticed a pattern which usually leads to threads getting closed. It all stems from one comment from one person and I predicted as soon as that comment was made that the night wasn't going to end well.

in order to stop this happening we ought to look at the root of the problem first and go from there.
You saying "here it comes" just as the topic was moving on? :hehe:

Tbf after Josy dealt with it she warned everyone the thread would be locked if people didn't behave and guess what nobody took her advice so she locked them

why does our chat thread get closed too every time the children get out of hand? (ignoring obvious "they just move over there" reasons, in which case maybe ban them?)

yes, the expression of frustration with an immature few hindering other threads must mean I am in a clique, that is it

I use the other thread because it's slower-paced and I can't really keep up with the most-used one, not really anything else to it. Bit amused you of all people are raising concern about cliques though when you have had how many tiny chats, kiks, and god knows what else with a select few members that end up being dragged onto the forum, over the years?

I don't know. I haven't used the chat thread properly for weeks.

What do you mean by that? There were no other people posting? It's people like you who make the "us" and "them" hostility worse.
