Wales has become the first nation in the UK to introduce a "revolutionary" new system to increase the number of organ donors.

From Tuesday, adults will be regarded as having consented to organ donation unless they have opted out.

More than one million people - 34% of the population - have registered to opt in already and 86,000 have opted out.

Health Minister Mark Drakeford called it a "ground-breaking step which will save lives".

He paid tribute to the cross-party support for the change in the law, which aims to increase the number of donors by 25%.

Fantastic idea, so screamingly simple.

I'm surprised that 86,000 people have opted out. The population of Wales is only 3m.

This is a great idea.

Over 914,000 opt ins is amazing though, hope they roll it out nationwide.

it's a no-brainer. (to put it in simpsons terms)

of course all people should be assumed to be organ donors, and frankly, even if they opt out, we should still take their organs because they are ****ing DEAD anyway!

anyone who opts out is a selfish prick and they should have their organs stolen just out of principle.

I also think all prisoners who are serving a life sentence should have to donate 1 of their kidneys while they are alive. They can easily live on 1 kidney.

No LT for **** sake think before you open that trap! People who buy lotto tickets at Spar, invariably, also buy 40 superking and a bottle of vodka alongside. They have chronic alcohol problems, every last one, and their organs are shrivelled and useless for anything bit cheap dog food.

If I wasn't already registered as an organ donor, I would have opted out of this.

I would opt out tbf they cant force you to be a donor and some people are unable to make thier own mind up and say no

I agree, opting out is far better than having to opt in, I hope this gets extended to the rest of the UK.

Do you have a particular use for your organs when you are dead? Or do you just not like helping others?

its a good one for the conspiracy theorists. The argument that someone unscrupulous could kill you off for your organs still holds true.

There's no doubt in essence it seems a great solution, I hope the reassurances are there that all ethical bases have been covered. That organs are going where they are most needed and not the highest bidder.
Also are the organs harvested solely for transplantation and no other reason?

Vicky.

Long overdue, hopefully the rest of the UK (and the world tbh) follow suit.

Your organs are useless to you once you are dead. Why not save someone elses life rather than feed the ****ing worms or make a bit more ash

And if you are THAT much against it for whatever reason..opt out.

I do believe more people are in the 'dont care' zone than actually against it. And if you were that much against it, you would be sure to opt out. The dont cares are unlikely to sign UP to it because they...dont particularly care either way.
