The BBC are airing a three-part adaptation of what is probably Agatha Christie's most famous murder mystery over three nights from 26th-28th December. I've been excited about this ever since I first heard about this last December, thought I may as well open a thread for it now the airdate has been announced.

Press Release:
1939. As civilization teeters on the brink of war, ten strangers are persuaded to retreat from their troubled lives to Soldier Island, an isolated rock off the Devon coast.

A reckless playboy, a decrepit judge, a nervous businessman, an unhinged Harley Street doctor, a god-fearing spinster, a secretive governess, a guilt-ridden general, a remorseless mercenary and two anxious servants find themselves cut off from the mainland by appalling weather. Their hosts Mr and Mrs U.N. Owen mysteriously absent, the guests are each accused of a unique and terrible crime by a gramophone recording, timed perfectly to deliver its indictments after dinner.

As the assembled guests begin to realise that not one of them has set eyes on the missing Owens, the true reason for their presence on the island becomes horribly clear: they are to be executed, one by one.

But where is the killer hiding? Could it be true that the group harbours a murderer among their number?

Cast List:

Douglas Booth as Anthony Marston
Charles Dance as Justice Lawrence Wargrave
Maeve Dermody as Vera Claythorne
Burn Gorman as William Blore
Anna Maxwell Martin as Ethel Rogers
Sam Neill as General John MacArthur
Miranda Richardson as Miss Emily Brent
Toby Stephens as Dr Edward Armstrong
Noah Taylor as Thomas Rogers
Aidan Turner as Philip Lombard

I've wanted to read the novel for a while. Might drop some not-so-subtle hints for my birthday next year.

I watched it, I thought it was ok but it didn't really grab me enough to want to watch any more of it to be honest.

I guessed that the coke head guy would die first though :smug:

I really liked it! Took a while to really kick things off but that didn't bother me, I like that it took the time to set up the story and get us familiar with the characters first (that's why I'm glad it's a 3-parter rather than being rushed over one installment ).

Glad he died first. Lovely to look at but what an almighty knobhead. :hee:

Shame about the maid afterwards though, I liked her. </3

I'm gonna hopefully get the original novel sometime in the next year too.

I already know the killer too but because of my own curiosity, I read the story summary on Wikipedia ages ago.

Still, I don't expect it will take too much of my enjoyment away. :)

I'm surprised only one person is blaming Vera. She was with the General before he died and left the kitchen just before Emily died.

Well, that was

I already knew how it ended but I was looking forward to seeing it all play out, and that did not disappoint. :clap1:

Now I need to read the actual book. :hee:

Agreed some good on at christmas finally

I was kinda spoiled about the killer so was shocked when he "died"

Vera was the most interesting character; in episode 1 I felt like we was suppose to like her and root for her to survive, in episode 2 you start to doubt her and see her go a bit cabin fever crazy and by the episode 3 we discover she is nothing but a cold hearted bitch who quite possibly was the worst of them all. I was rooting for her death by the end. I googled and saw that in some plays/films they change it for her to survive with Aiden Turners character. Glad that did not happen I found her repulsive.

Brilliant acting from all.

Yeah, the twist in her backstory was great and totally flipped how I saw her character. And yeah, I believe that prior to this version, the only screen adaptation to keep the book's ending was a 1987 Russian movie version. I'd read before the series aired that this one was using that ending so that just made me even more excited for it. The bleak ending works perfectly imo.

Agatha Christie = Genius!

What's annoying is that I thought it was him watching Episode 3 and then when he died, I instantly ruled him out! Dumb me!

Did anyone else think Vera was the spitting image of Emily Blunt?

Loved her trying to pin it all on Lombard at the end, and the judge was like "he was the sanest one here" When he killed like 21 people

Oh and when she was like "I done it before" regarding covering up a murder I just wanted him to kill her quicker. Such a cold hearted cow.

Yes I was spoiled on who the killer was so when he died I thought it was Vera then, but after the cop was killed she was shown outside so it could not have been her so I thought the Judge had fake his death with the help of the docotr because I dont remember a bullet being shot.

Great adaptation. Pretty much true to the novel except for the coppers back story and the way the ending was told.. Really liked the dark atmosphere to the whole thing.
