UNT police release video of officer fatally shooting student

Authorities have released dashcam videos that show a police officer fatally shooting an ax-wielding University of North Texas student.
Ryan McMillan, 21, carried a hatchet as he walked in front of a campus police officer’s patrol car. In the video, he restates “shoot me” over and over again. According to the Dallas Morning News, UNT spokeswoman Margarita Venegas said police responded to a report that an individual was breaking windows near campus. She said McMillan approached the officer with the ax and the officer shot him.
The graphic video shows McMillan walking toward the officer, identified as Cpl. Stephen Bean, as he asks to be shot. McMillan does not appear to raise the ax toward Bean. However, he keeps moving closer to Bean as the officer warns him to “back away.”
UNT spokeswoman Kelly Reese said, “This is the first time in at least 23 years that a UNT police officer had discharged a (weapon) while on duty,”
