There's always been a slave trade.

Everyone will try to knock it, and the Empire did do some terrible things. It also built the infrastructure of countries, roads, rail, sanitation... brought education and set in place a system of government. The Empire is now the British Commonwealth, and even countries who were not part of the Empire belong to it because it is good for them. And if we hadn't colonised those countries, someone else would have. The French for instance, or the Germans.

The Empire wasn't a good thing, no one could claim that. But it wasn't all bad either and left a legacy that is frequently overlooked because the conversation of usually hijacked by people who believe the Empire began the slave trade. Which is did not.
