The 2016 Summer Olympics (Portuguese: Jogos Olímpicos de Verão de 2016), officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, and commonly known as Rio 2016, is a major international multi-sport event in the tradition of the Olympic Games due to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016.

A record number of countries are participating in a record number of sports. More than 10,500 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), including first time entrants Kosovo and South Sudan, are scheduled to take part. With 306 sets of medals, the games will feature 28 Olympic sports — including rugby sevens and golf, which were added by the International Olympic Committee in 2009.

These sporting events will take place at 33 venues in the host city and at 5 venues in the cities of São Paulo (Brazil's largest city), Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Brasília (Brazil's capital), and Manaus.

Going to have a low budget opening ceremony and will be vision of what they hope Brazil will be like in the future.

Fernando Meirelles said in September 2015 that the ceremony will be a vision of the country "and what I hope it will become". Meirelles said he will try to steer away from cliches, but not all of them. The carnival will definitely be in the show.

It's in Brazil what do people expect lol, to many will try and compare it to how Beijing and London were where the population could actually afford to go and people would actually travel to go there, just take it for what it is.

It's not even that. It's people not wanting to go there to compete, facilities not yet ready/damaged, the sea being full of sewage and unsafe for people to use, the whole thing with the Russians, theres so much negativity going on theres not been any real excitement leading up to this

The whole thing with people not going there to compete is their own problem for being greedy and that's mainly just the Golfers who dont want to give anything back when they take take take all year and using Zika as an excuse when Doctors have said their is little risk so no real loss there and as a 1st time event at the olympics it will still get interest no matter who goes

As for the Russian thing, they've banned the ban problem which was track and field.


If Gaitlin v Bolt, Mo and Dafne Schippers going for the double, JEH v KJT v BTE and Phelps v Le Clos doesn't get you hyped nothing at the olympics ever will :idc:

They hosted the World Cup 2 years ago as well and that was more of a success then this year's Euros when you think about the security measures despite being less financially equipped then France, if they deal with a WC some ****ty sewerage will be a piece of cake

An Irish boxer has failed a drugs test in the build-up to the Rio Olympics.

The Olympic Council of Ireland said the fighter is provisionally suspended from competition after an "adverse analytical" finding in an A-sample.

"The athlete will now decide whether to accept a sanction for a doping violation, to request that a B-sample be tested, or to appeal the provisional suspension," it added.

"The finding relates to a test not conducted at the 2016 Olympic Games."

The council stated that the Sport Ireland Anti-Doping Agency "has returned an adverse analytical finding in an A sample provided to anti-doping officers".

An Irish Athletic Boxing Association statement said it had been notified by Sport Ireland of an "alleged violation" by one of its high-performance boxers.

The boxer has not been named officially, but is believed to a member of Ireland's eight-strong Olympic team.

The association added that it has "always maintained a zero tolerance approach to doping".

"Irish Boxing has been one of the most widely tested sports by the National Anti-Doping Programme over the last number of years," it said.

"We ensure our boxers are available for testing in and out of competition.

"The Irish Athletic Boxing Association will not be in a position to comment further until all elements of due process associated with the anti-doping programme are completed in this case."

Brazil football legend Pele will not light the Olympic cauldron at Friday's opening ceremony in Rio.

The 75-year-old was rumoured to be favourite to perform the duty which has previously been carried out by other sporting greats such as Muhammad Ali and Cathy Freeman.

The three-time World Cup winner has been suffering from muscle pains and had hip surgery earlier this year.

"I'm not in physical condition to take part in the opening ceremony," he said.

BBC commentary is great but my god do they spout a load of **** sometimes. I remember at the Beijing World Champs last year they spent 55 minutes after Mo Farah had won Gold discussing if he was the greatest athlete of all time, watching replays etc meanwhile there were plenty of field finals still going on.

BBC commentary is great but my god do they spout a load of **** sometimes. I remember at the Beijing World Champs last year they spent 55 minutes after Mo Farah had won Gold discussing if he was the greatest athlete of all time, watching replays etc meanwhile there were plenty of field finals still going on.

Did they not provide a red button stadium feed so you could watch the events unfold live if you didn't want the studio discussion? I know they did for the London Olympics and I expect and hope they'll be doing the same here. If they didn't you can blame the government and its forced budget cuts on the BBC for that :laugh:

Personally I like the punditry and stuff but I understand why some people don't and think there should be the alternative option. The BBC is unrivalled when it comes to sports coverage as far as I'm concerned though and London proves why
