I'd be interested to see the figures for the last 5 or so years actually... It FEELS like a lot of people have stopped smoking? It seems like it's not actually that common any more... A lot of older people seem to have quit or at least cut back a lot, and a lot of younger people seem to be switching to vagina.

I'm not sure if I'm imagining it or if it's not as big a shift as it seems to be though. Makes me wonder if there's been an obvious drop in sales or tax revenue...

Also, I recently quit, and I quite like walking past smokers now and feeling superior to them :hee: Don't take one of my daily joys away from me :fist:

I don't like when people smoke on the streets either, I don't like the smell of it and it instantly gives me a bad impression of whoever is doing it. I don't see it much in Portugal though, there are a lot of smokers here, I don't know where they smoke. :joker:

Though, there is one guy in my building who lights his cigarette while he's walking down the stairs to the exit. It really bothers me! Why does he feel entitled to do that in a shared building with lots of families. There's no insulation between the hallways and the apartments because all of the doors have a space under them. :worry:

Not bothered about all the noxious toxic gasses polluting the air whilst fracking Arista?
Is the recent smog, air quality that makes it actually dangerous for asthmatics to walk around in down to smokers?...

Either have the courage to make buying cigarettes, cigars and tobacco illegal or stop persecuting further those who choose to do so.

Er what lol?! I said that, quite clearly, in response to you talking about people smoking outside (which is what the thread is about). I never suggested anything about smoking indoors being ok, so your facts about Roy Castle were completely irrelevant, and didn't "correct" what I was saying at all. Which I was quite happy to leave as it was, but don't bring me back up because you're being called out on your irrelevant example as if I'm somehow to blame for you getting something wrong, and don't tell me I don't know what the facts are when I haven't stated anything that is untrue :nono:

More police state bull**** from the brain of Arista.

BTW Roy Castle died after about thirty years of inhaling smoke in music halls where people were allowed to smoke so there is no argument that passive smoke - especially outside - is all that dangerous to others. Something that takes decades to kill cant be all that dangerous.

Law or not we were still tossed out of pubs and restaurants.

Which I think was wrong. Smoking has never bothered me although I don't smoke myself, I never had any issue with anyone having a cigarette in a pub or restaurant.
In fact I quite like the aroma of someone smoking.

It really annoys me the way smokers get put down, when they pay massive taxes on the product they buy and the treasury would be sunk if everyone stopped smoking.
Hence their cowardly raising more and more from it and never making it illegal to smoke.

Smokers also pay council tax and therefore have every right to be doing so in public areas.
I was walking out before Christmas and saw a Parent allow their child to wee against a bus stop, just across the road from the bus stop is a supermarket with toilets in it, I found that far more offensive than anyone smoking a cigarette in the open air.

:clap1::clap1::clap1: Superbly put.

My generation started smoking in the first place because it was the 'social norm' and was deemed 'cool' thanks to massive conditioning via glossy advertising on hoardings, in magazines and newspapers, adverts on TV and in cinemas, and even thanks, in no little part, to most of the top film and TV stars - male AND female - smoking in films and in TV programs.

Various UK Government policy regarding smoking is, and always has been - as you so rightly intimate - disgustingly hypocritical.

It was not that long ago, that pubs and clubs had 'Public Bars', 'Snugs', 'Concert Rooms' AND 'Smoking Rooms' - a system which worked admirably well, with no one who did not smoke being forced to sufferer 'second-hand' smoke and all its undoubted health risks and unpleasantness, yet no smoker was made to feel like a criminal and forced to smoke outside in all weathers.

You are absolutely correct again Joey.

Exactly. and as you say if people still want to smoke so what.
Surely a public place is a public place and as long as nothing illegal is being done, why any need for extra laws, especially ones that would prohibit an actual legal act anyway.

Under bus shelters that usually are open at the bottom of them and then have 2 sides open as well.
However what a stupid rule anyway, since just take 2 steps outside the bus shelter and its legal to smoke there, as if the smoke couldn't possibly find its way under the bottom or the open sides.

Ridiculous and the nanny state gone mad in my view.

The reason smoking exists is to do with the fact that sub 40 humans have little concept of mortality so they can smoke like pigs and dont care

by the time they get to 40 and start to realise they will die its too late

Thus it must be banned outright

Northern Monkey
05-01-2016, 05:41 PM
Eventually it will be banned,Just not for a while. It's already being slowly phased out with the messages on packets, ciggies being hidden behind doors in shops, banned in public buildings etc.The state are just slowly grooming people into acceptance of banning it.Smokers are slowly becoming a minority. It will take a few generations but it will happen when so little people smoke that it's not profitable for the country.
Of course they will never stop people smoking as they will just get them on the black market but as companies stop making them then quality will go down.
Personally i'm all for people to make their own choices in life.Cigs are more dangerous than many drugs. If we are going to keep ciggies legal then we should just make all drugs legal. It is hypocritical to let people take one or two lethal drugs but not others.
