Twitter will punish users for "hateful" abuse, including homophobic, racist and transphobic tweets.

The social media website has clarified its Twitter Rules, which prohibit anyone from "inciting harm towards others" in such a way.

"You may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease," it reads.

Twitter's Megan Cristina added in a blog post: "The updated language emphasises that Twitter will not tolerate behaviour intended to harass, intimidate or use fear to silence another user's voice.

"As always, we embrace and encourage diverse opinions and beliefs - but we will continue to take action on accounts that cross the line into abuse."

Twitter recently introduced anti-troll measures, including phone verification to force users to identify themselves online.

Yeah - This is true. Let's just hope that 'Serious Cases' includes ***** like Hopkins, otherwise it is all a meaningless hollow gesture.

There's so much abuse going on there, but nothing is ever done about it. It's the reason i rarely go there anymore, i find it disgusting. All abusive posters should be banned.

Thing is,If they enforce this they will lose alot of users.If the ban hammer actually gets struck on a large scale then a good percentage will just boycott the site.Are they willing to lose all those users?I doubt it tbh.I think this is just hot air to try and appear PC.I think the reality will be a different story.If they did ban people like Hopkins then they will look like they are against free speech and it will go bad for them.
