I think it has a lot to do with them growing up and discovering their sexuality at a very difficult time in history for gay people. So to be able to be openly gay, and show pride in it, is a much bigger deal to guys in their 40's/50's than it is to younger guys. And so I think that his innuendo's etc, are just his way of trying to show that he doesn't have to hide his sexuality. That's my theory anyway. It might be grating and annoying for other people, who may not have had the same life experiences as John, but I think I can understand why he does it.
