I'm more surprised by the fact that it had a summer slot, not surprised at all that it's been pushed back.

Yep. It's not a "Summer Blockbuster" - they've seen how well ep 7 did over the winter / Christmas release period and want to follow the same route next time. It's probably that simple. I reckon rewrites will be an excuse.
