The west can do nothing about it though, that's what is interesting. NK prove that having a nuke is a deterrent, cause no other country is prepared to take any real action against them other than blowing a metaphorical raspberry

That's mainly because China hasn't severed ties (yet) and also because of the proximity to SK which would be devastated in all-out war, even a conventional one.

If China had cut them loose and SK wasn't a concern, they would be swatted long before developing an ICBM, even if they do have viable warheads.

Image is everything to someone like Kim Jong Un, if he's seen as a strong threat then he has power. His whole regime is built upon fear and it's balanced on a pinhead. Destroy his image and you destroy the power he has which is why he's so desperate to publicise these tests.

If these tests are more than just grandstanding then I predict KJU will suffer a fatal 'accident' very soon.
