Pub landlord 'told by council officers to remove Union Jack jacket because it might offend people'
Jason Mawer has been warned twice to remove his one-off jacket
Mawer runs a pub near the centre of Barnsley, South Yorkshire
The unique Mod-style jacket was made for a Who convention in London
Pub landlord Jason Mawer has twice been asked in public to remove his treasured Union Jack jacket - for risk of it being 'offensive'.
He was told to take off his valuable Mod-style Barbour jacket - designed in honour of legendary rock band The Who - by officials who appeared to be council enforcement officers.
On the second occasion the female official warned him: 'Would you mind removing your coat it might offend somebody.'

Let us be honest here, it is the council officials who cause the offence.
All these ruddy council cuts and this is what they waste their time on:shrug:

"I aint racist! I just don't like the smell of them sand-******s or Scotchmen!" said Robbie Racist, masturbating furiously into a St. George's Cross flag.
... ... ... My real opinion is, this is obviously over the top if there's genuinely no statement being made alongside him wearing the jacket. It's just a jacket. On the other hand, the above faux-quote is based on reality. In the small English town I used to live in, there was a pub that was absolutely covered in England flags and various "patriotic" wall coverings and it was made abundantly clear that non-English people (including Scottish people) were not at all welcome.

He should have been arrested for crimes against fashion tbh.. It's a terrible jacket
Joking aside though, I do think that the Union Flag's symbolism had been sullied somewhat ever since the likes of the EDL and Britain First have adopted it as their own.. To some, it being synonymous with these groups may look on it as being likely to cause trouble? I don't really know, just an idea.

It does'nt matter if anyone THINKS it's racist. It's not.No Swastikas or racial wording.Just our Great British Union Jack.If you can't wear a Union Jack in Britain then where the **** can you wear one?Does any other country ban there own flag?People can think what they want about it.It's just a flag on a jacket. The council has no business telling anyone what jacket to wear.
Burkas might offend people but they're not banned.

There's some truth to this. It's a real shame, because of course in reality such a request is absurd, but the Union flag has become synonymous with far-right, racist organisations and have thus in turn hijacked something which should be completely innocuous. That doesn't excuse the idiocy of things like this, but there's a reason they happen.
Unfortunately, all it turns into is clickbait and reactionary nonsense for the 'IT'S PC GONE MAD!!!!! THESE MUSLIM SCUM WE WANT OUR COUNTRY BACK!!!' types to jump on in such ironic fashion.

I doubt this actually happened, there's no statement from the council and he's a business owner which makes me think this is just a publicity stunt.
Pretty much all stories like this are made up in order to bait the gullible into getting angry over nothing.

There's proof to support the fact that a large part of UKIP are bigoted, look at the scandals that have followed them for years, scandals fueled by EVIDENCE.
All we have to go off on this article is one man's unconfirmed story with no response from the other party. It's piss poor journalism that's meant to bait people like yourself into getting angry and thinking that your casual bigotry is justified.

The fact that there's no statement from the council on the matter, usually if a representative acts out of line and it gets press attention then the council will comment on it. The fact that this article only covers one side of the story suggests that it didn't happen.
It's basic journalism, LT, you get both sides of the story and report on it. Stories that only cover one side are always suspect.

I think its a great shame that our flag has been sullied. If I'm honest, people wearing jackets like that do make me nervous but its only because I've been privi to the regular far right protesters walking through central London all wearing our flag like a uniform.
People should be able to wear the union jack without being thought of as a racist but people also have to accept that if they do wear the flag, people may misjudge them.
Its a difficult one.

The law doesn't prevent trouble. It may deal with troublemakers after the trouble has happened, but it will not prevent it.
Asking pub goers not to wear football tops or flags does. That's why a lot of landlords have this rule.

..it really isn't a great jacket/style-wise and I'm inclined to agree with Dezzy, that this story is a bit of promo for the jacket and quite sceptical...I can't find that it's in any way related to the Who/Roger Daltry, only that the jackets were launched by Selfridges for almost £500 each...and of course the Union Jack, British Bulldog, Red Phone Boxes etc are quite trendy and retro atm on many things/clothing, house accessories etc...well they have been in vogue for a while I think....
...mind you an interesting 'fact' I guess, reported from Selfridges is that an appearance from Nick Griffin on Question Time once, saw an increase in their Union Jack related products of 50%....

I agree. Burkas offend me, but if I went to the council and told them that they would probably tell me to get lost. It's only Britains in Britain who get penalised for being proud to be British.

Exactly. It is ridiculous.Britain is way too soft.Soft on everyone except it's own people.Imigrants are treated better than British people.
...hmmm, it's a difficult one isn't it...I think someone has said earlier in the thread, with The Union Jack, it's the 'attachment' to negativity/racism with things like the BNP party/UKIP etc so something good and positive and to be proud of has been 'tainted' into being perceived by some as a negative and so we have the 'PC', when there should be nothing PC about a country's flag...(although I am sceptical about this story atm...)...and there again with Burkas, I think there has become a similar negative attachment for some with ISIS/extreme terrorism...and I don't personally think that's 'being soft on in Britian' atm because burkas are being banned in some places, which 'back in the day', the thought of banning them wouldn't have been something considered/but the more recent times, 'negative attachment'....
...anyways, banning wouldn't be the answer to me with the Union Jack...if something has been tainted into a negative association, it would be more 'reclaiming' as it were of it into something more positive and there are many, many positives...
Vicky.
