..I don't know it this is an indie band that anyone knows..?../very, very tragic...

Five men - believed to include four members of a British indie band - have been killed after their car plunged off a bridge in Sweden.

Their Nissan Qashqai was travelling along the E4 highway in Stockholm when it careered off an 82ft-high bridge into the Sodertalje canal.

Police divers recovered the bodies of five men - aged between 19 and 32 - from the water.

Their names have not been released, but they are understood to be four-piece band Viola Beach.

The fifth man killed was their manager, say reports.

The Warrington-based group had played a gig in Sweden on Friday, according to their Facebook page.

They were due to play in Guildford, Surrey, on Saturday night, but the venue said the gig had been cancelled due to "unforeseen circumstances".

Fans have been paying tribute to Viola Beach on social media.

Ibiza Rocks ‏tweeted: "Saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of @Viola_Beach. Lovely guys & a band we were big fans of at #RocksHQ".

The band's car crashed through a barrier and into the canal after the bridge, at the Saltskogs junction between the E4 and the E20 motorways, opened to let a boat pass underneath, Swedish police said.

The bridge has a middle section that rises upwards, leaving a gap that the car drove into

Officers said a barrier, 50 metres before the opening, has flashing lights and signs warning there is a bridge opening.

Inspector Martin Bergholm said: "For some reason, the car drove through the barriers and crashed down into the canal."

He added: "The witnesses just saw a car beside them and kind of disappear."

He said it was not yet known whether the five men were wearing seatbelts but added: "That would not have helped them."

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that five British nationals died in a car accident in Sweden on February 13.

"We are in contact with local authorities and supporting the families at this very difficult time".

Such a tragedy Ammi. I know it should not make a difference, but it always makes me sadder when those who are so cruelly taken are so young. They haven't even had a chance at life. RIP all of you.

Shocking Deaths

The band's car crashed through a motorway bridge barrier and plunged over 80ft into a canal near the Swedish capital Stockholm.

It's always sad when young talent gets extinguished before they have the chance to realise their potential.

the bridge opened and shut and was coming down to shut so looks like they approached at speed and did not realise the bridge was closed, saw the barrier, threw the car to one side to miss it and plunged to their deaths so it would have been pretty quick - over in a few seconds

It's been decades since a whole band died in a tragic accident so people do genuinely feel.

what?

I'm just saying, unless I missed one it's been decades since a whole band has died in a tragic accident-like for example some bands that died in plane crashes. We haven't heard a story like this in a long time so people do genuinely feel sad. It's not bandwagon. One band member tragic enough but the whole band on the verge of doing well.

The song is #1 on iTunes now... I'm not sure that'll translate to the real charts because streaming is so powerful over chart positions now but there you go.

It is tragic that people so young should die so needlessly.
On the news here in Scandinavia it said that their car was in line waiting, when suddenly they pulled out into the empty oncoming lane and drove at speed towards the bridge opening. Did they not wonder why the lane was empty? The flashing lights should have given them a clue. Still, it's sad that it happened.
