[Stephen Fry appears to have deleted his Twitter account after being criticised
for calling the winner of the BAFTA award for costume design a "bag lady".
Jenny Beavan, who won the prize for Mad Max: Fury Road, wore trousers,
a leather jacket and a scarf to the star-studded ceremony
at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden.]

I was a bit taken aback by the comment, but now that I know they're very good friends, it changes things

Thats does not matter.
His Big Error
was to tell those on Twitter, moaning at him,
to FECK OFF
that then turns into death threats etc.
He needs to learn to say right after his Joke
"Dark Humour Alert"
Locke.

I don't get it, it was obviously a joke (and even if it wasn't, it was hardly offensive... was it???), why would people complain about that?!
He needs to learn to say right after his Joke
"Dark Humour Alert"
It wasn't even dark humour though really, it was just a playful joke about himself and his friend.

But No One attacking him on Twitter
knew that
His error is not adding the rest.
The offence people are taking on her behalf for something they have no real clue about (and was a joke between friends anyway) is ridiculously OTT and pearl-clutchy - okay, maybe he shouldn't have made that joke when the people watching wouldn't have known that's what it was, but this culture of taking immediate offence on behalf of others is a bit comical, ironically

...I think Stephen's done the right thing for him, I was watching him talk about his manic depression the other day and others like Robin Williams who sadly also suffered the same ...the internet is becoming far too 'important' in terms of effecting others lives and some people feeling as though they have to relay their negativity and judgement and general spitefulness and in some cases, real hate onto others..those little keyboard warriors...he doesn't need that in his life, he doesn't need to feel negative internet judgement for something that wasn't meant with anything negative, but was said in joking and with affection...don't get involved with the silliness Steven, don't let it rain it's doom cloud over you and your life, just walk away and let the idiots get on with it...
...it sometimes seems to me with things like Twitter, that if you don't become yourself the very thing that these negative little armchair warriors are themselves, then you're a bit of a 'let down'...not giving the good drama filled performance of an internet 'slagging match'.../thank goodness not Stephen getting involved in such the like...

I agree Jenny. The internet is a wonderful invention, but it also gives an international platform for obnoxious cowards to spew out their toxic bile without recrimination, when really, they would otherwise remain voiceless and with no room for any audience under the cramped confines of their 'hidey holes' beneath those slimy stones.
Fry is a GENIUS - a tormented genius - but a genius nonetheless, and he is bigger than these bullying, baying cowards.
